The Opportunity

The controller will be a critical financial leader, responsible for managing the nonprofit’s financial operations, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and supporting strategic financial decision-making. The role will be hybrid, with a monthly requirement to be in-office in Flagstaff, AZ. This position will have 1-2 direct reports.

You are an accounting expert and more importantly, you are able to communicate financial information in a way that highlights actionable insights and empowers leadership and board members to make informed decisions. You’re comfortable navigating a nonprofit setting, balancing fiscal discipline with organizational flexibility and paving the way for scalability of a dynamic growing startup. You are collaborative and practice professionalism daily while bringing your unique individual leadership.

Primary Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Oversight

  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and government regulations
  • Develop comprehensive financial strategies aligned with organizational goals
  • Oversee all accounting functions, and maintain chart of accounts
  • Manage A/P, /AR, P/R, general ledger, and collection function
  • Manage organizational cash flow
  • Develop and maintain robust financial policies, internal controls, processes & procedures
  • In collaboration with the board finance committee, coordinate annual audits with outside independent auditors and regulatory agencies, oversee preparation of required items.
  • Manage financial risk management and compliance

Planning & Reporting

  • Lead financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting process in conjunction with the ED; monitor progress and changes and communicate regularly on the organization’s financial status with the ED
  • Present all reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate financial statements
  • Perform financial analysis and support proposal activity and help to create pricing responses to RFP, RFQ’s, and grant proposals
  • Produce monthly and annual financial reporting, and provide ongoing financial analysis
  • Work with advisory team and board to deliver reports as needed
  • Produce financial reports for grant accounting & tracking

Team Management

  • Supervise and develop the bookkeeping team;
  • Run the NRI coaching program with direct reports (1-2)
  • Oversee Expensify & reimbursement process, managed by direct reports

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, CPA certification preferred
  • Government and/or nonprofit contract accounting experience, Cost accounting standards and FAR/DFARs knowledge
  • Minimum 5 years experience as a Controller or Accounting Auditor
  • Proficiency in Quickbooks, G Suite, MS Office
  • FFP, T&M and Cost plus Contracts experience
  • Experience with hands on preparation and review of incurred cost submissions and forward pricing rates
  • Advanced knowledge of fund accounting and nonprofit financial management
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in or with tribal communities
  • Familiarity with Expensify
