Job Title: Layout Technician – Manual Machine Shop
Location: PRL Industries, Inc.
Reports To: Machine Operations Manager
Job Summary:
PRL Industries, Inc. is seeking a detail-oriented Layout Technician to support our manual machine shop operations. This position is responsible for accurately inspecting and marking out castings, machined components, and other metal parts before machining, ensuring compliance with specifications for the Navy and nuclear industries. The Layout Technician plays a critical role in preparing parts for machining, verifying dimensions, and maintaining quality control standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Part Layout & Inspection:
Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and GD&T specifications to determine layout and machining requirements.- Use precision measuring instruments (height gauges, calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, etc.) to mark reference points on castings and components.
- Identify and communicate any dimensional discrepancies before machining begins.
Collaboration & Coordination:
Work closely with machine shop personnel, engineers, and quality inspectors to ensure accurate layouts and prevent machining errors.- Support machinists by providing clear and precise layout markings to optimize machining efficiency.
- Assist in troubleshooting any layout-related issues and provide recommendations for adjustments.
Quality & Compliance:
Ensure all layouts align with Navy and nuclear industry standards, as well as PRL’s internal quality requirements.- Maintain accurate records of layout measurements and inspection results.
- Adhere to safety regulations, shop procedures, and quality assurance protocols.
Equipment & Maintenance:
Maintain measuring tools and layout equipment, ensuring calibration and accuracy.- Keep workstations organized and ensure tools are properly stored and maintained.
Qualifications & Experience:
Experience:
3 years of experience in layout, machining, or inspection in a manufacturing or machine shop environment.- Experience working with large castings, manual machining processes, and precision inspection tools preferred.
Technical Skills:
Strong understanding of blueprints, GD&T, and precision measuring techniques.- Proficiency with height gauges, surface plates, dial indicators, and other layout tools.
- Knowledge of manual machining operations and processes is a plus.
Education & Certifications:
High school diploma or equivalent required.- Technical training in machining, manufacturing, or quality control preferred.
Soft Skills:
Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and communication abilities.
