POSITION TITLE: Dialysis Patient Care Technician CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt DEPARTMENT: Medical/Telemetry Unit SUPERVISOR: Registered Nurse Supervisor DATE REVISED: January 2024 Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse Supervisor - Medical/Telemetry Unit, the Patient Care Technician (PCT) will be an integral part of a cross-functional team providing care and delegated activities of treatment to patients. The PCT will work under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Charge Nurse (CN) for patients with renal failure. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Complete required competencies for unit assigned to work in.
  • Establish, implement, and communicate goals, objectives, policies, and procedures in accordance with nursing plan and practice.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and ordinances including Centers for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS) and The Joint Commission Accreditation.
  • Implement standard of care practices.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality of all patient and employee information.
  • Translate diagnosis information into Navajo language or arrange for a translator for the patient.
  • Provide and support activities regarding implementation of hospital policy on patient's rights and responsibilities.
  • Maintain personal record of in-service participation to reflect at least three activities per year.
  • Ensure that new hire orientation and other mandatory training requirements are attended annually (e.g.: CPI, etc.)
  • Accept and adapt to change in work area and/or work duties as assigned.
  • Work directly with patients to provide safe, comfortable, and high-quality dialysis treatment.
  • Gather patient stats before and after treatment, initiating treatment, monitoring patients during treatment, terminating treatment, and collecting patient blood samples per physician orders.
  • Ensure quality comes first by preparing machines for hemodialysis treatments, cleaning and disinfecting machines after treatment, and conducting machine safety checks and logging results for quality control, ensuring all protocols and regulations are followed.   • Use appropriate safety measures, including personal protective equipment.
  • Properly documents all patients' vital signs and results, and reports these to RN in a timely manner.
  • Practice proper isolation techniques and maintains a clean safe working environment.
  • Collaborate with medical providers and other discipline resources in planning and providing patient care services.
  • Coordinate ordering of medical supplies.
  • Collaborate to ensure proper provision of care to provide for psychological, psychosocial environmental, educational and discharge planning needs of the patient are met.
  • Practice infection control and patient safety procedures.
  • Attend mandatory departmental staff meetings.
  • Meet and comply with the company policies and procedures.
  • Provide “On-Callâ€� duties as needed.

  • Knowledge of clinical instruments and equipment.
  • Knowledge of clinical department's operational procedures.
  • Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and mathematics.
  • Knowledge of the location of all supplies, forms, crash cart in the department.
  • Knowledge of the abuse and domestic violence policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the blood bank alarm response procedures.
  • Knowledge of effective body mechanics.
  • Ability to perform effective interpersonal skills and be able to function at a high level of independence.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationship with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and demonstrate team-building skills with empathy and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, and presentation software such as PowerPoint.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the Employee regularly required sit; use hands and fingers to grasp objects; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and stand, stoop, crouch, kneel while performing this job. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds of weight. Work Environment: Work is generally performed in an office, clinic or hospital setting with exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment and exposure to blood borne pathogens. Exposure to latex products on a routine basis. Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.

Position Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma.
  • One (1) year of experience in a medical environment, preferably in a medical surgical setting.
  • Valid certification as Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) is preferred. Dialysis Technician on training with a minimum of 500 hours required.
  • Ability to run dialysis treatment with NxStage System One Dialysis Unit independently is required.
  • Valid American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS Certification.
  • Successfully complete Employee Health Program requirements and background investigation.
