Summary You will serve as a HIGH VOLTAGE ELECTRICIAN in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST. Responsibilities You will install and maintain overhead and underground distribution lines as assigned. You will install, modify, and replace generation and distribution equipment in substations, power-generating facilities, transformer vaults, or distribution centers. You will use test devices (e.g., voltmeters, ohmmeters, meggers) and electrical tools to conduct basic checks for continuity, resistance, voltage, shorts, insulation breakdowns, and grounds. You will set correct wire tension or sag in accordance with strength and weight of wire. You will troubleshoot distribution circuits, generating, and controlling equipment to locate and correct the cause of outages. You will troubleshoot distribution circuits to locate shorts, opens, grounds, crosses, damage, capacitance imbalances, and cable breaks. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and / or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is : ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION. Your resume must show that you have the ability to perform common tasks under general supervision including : 1) Following instructions to repair high voltage electrical power-generating and distribution equipment (e.g., generators, transformers, switches, circuit breakers, recording instruments, and control systems); 2) Reading circuit drawing and diagrams to identify electrical problems; and 3) Using safety equipment such as hot sticks, rubber blankets, and insulated gloves when working on energized high voltage electrical systems. NOTE : This experience must be fully supported in your resume to be considered for the position . To receive priority consideration, the FPL must be the same grade level or equivalent of the retained grade or the grade held immediately prior to separation Certain incentives (such as Recruitment, Relocation or Student Loan Repayment) may be authorized to eligible selectees. A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and / or unusual duty hours may be required.
