Job Description

The position of Lifting & Handling (L&H) Crane Mechanic (outside machinist) performs operations to maintain L&H equipment in a reliable and safe working condition. This includes but is not limited to the maintenance and inspection for repairs of large overhead cranes, rigging gear, equipment, and rail tracks.

Essential duties:

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, drawings, and collaborate with engineering on troubleshooting and repairs on equipment.
  • High level of knowledge regarding methods, practices, and techniques of maintaining industrial equipment.
  • Must be knowledgeable in processes to modify, disassemble and repair of; couplings, gearboxes, brakes, motors, mechanical systems, pumps, hydraulic systems, and other mechanical devices as needed.
  • Must be capable of ascending long staircases and ladders daily.
  • Must be comfortable working from elevated surfaces that include Aerial Lifts.
  • Must qualify as Essential Support Systems, L&H Crane Mechanic, Contamination Worker, LOTO, Fall Protection User, Manlift operator, General Handler, and if deemed necessary by the supervisor to qualify to any other Radiological or Environmental qualifications.
  • The position is a dayshift 9-80 or 4-10 working schedule and may require overtime or swing shift as directed by management when deemed necessary.
  • Must be knowledgeable with usage and information recording of precision instruments such as torque wrenches, micrometers, calipers etc.
  • Demonstrate a self-motivated approach to work.
  • Demonstrate ability to initiate projects and work independently when needed.

Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill

  • Vocational training in Mechanical or Automotive Technology school that include performing mechanical troubleshooting and repairs.

Or

  • High school degree or equivalent with 5 years of relevant experience performing mechanical troubleshooting and repair, or military mechanical and technical field related experience.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with overhead crane maintenance and load testing. Knowledge of crane mechanical systems.
  • Experience with technically related work and the ability to follow working procedures compliantly.
  • Demonstrate the ability to work with other work group organizations.

Pay Range

$31.80 hourly

Jobs categorized as subject to a collective bargaining agreement will adhere to the pay rates, wage increases, progression schedules, and other parameters identified and negotiated in said agreements. Wages and other compensation details are subject to change based negotiated changes to the collective bargaining agreements.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
