Job Description

NNL is seeking an entry-level materials engineer in our Core Systems Testing unit to conduct research and testing of nuclear fuel and cladding materials. This requires working with various engineering groups, laboratories, and test facilities including the Advanced Test Reactor to conduct irradiation test programs on current and advanced nuclear systems. Our unit is responsible for conceptualizing test goals, design of experiments, specimen design, following specimen fabrication and characterization, predicting test response under test conditions, sponsoring post-irradiation examinations, along with analyzing and reporting results. Specific tasks include writing test proposals, test planning, designing specimens, finite element modeling, Monte Carlo prediction of irradiation exposure, determining trends relative to prior testing, developing in-situ sensors, supporting shakedown of test equipment, writing reports, and making presentations. Individuals typically perform a subset of these tasks complementing other team members, while having an opportunity to shift and learn new tasks over time. The team actively manages individual workload based on skills, personal interest, and to develop skills, ensuring both business and individual success.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience / coursework in materials testing and characterization, including mechanical testing, metallography, hardness testing, electron microscopy, and failure analysis.
  • Experience / coursework performing thermal, structural, or nuclear analyses of materials and components.
  • Experience with multi-disciplined engineering projects.
  • Understanding / coursework involving materials fabrication processes, materials behavior, and materials properties.
  • Experience / coursework with project management, statistics, and design of experiments.
  • Experience / coursework with finite element modeling.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate technical information both verbally and in writing.
  • A combination of materials engineering, mechanical engineering, or nuclear engineering degrees or experience.

    62,000.00 - $94,900.00 annually

    The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities : Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.

    All candidates must be U.S. citizens. Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. FMP is a government contractor and maintains a drug free workplace and workforce. All candidates must be able to pass a drug test in compliance with FMP company policy and 10 CFR 707.
