Job Description

Naval Nuclear Laboratory has internship opportunities for college students to spend the summer of 2026 getting great work experience, in great locations, supporting the world's greatest Navy.

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is looking for a Computational Science intern to join our team! You will be part of a team that develops, tests, and optimizes scientific computing applications to support the mission. This team collaborates with users, developers, and subject matter experts to develop faster, higher fidelity, and more performant applications. As a Computational Science intern, you will work in a technically diverse and dynamic environment with a team of developers responsible for all aspects of software development of scientific computing applications for the business.

NNL Summer Technical Internships offer you an immersive professional experience in your field of study. You have the opportunity to work directly with world class engineers, scientists, researchers, and technicians who will provide you with real-world experience and mentorship. We work with state-of-the-art techniques researching and developing new technologies and concepts; designing and testing software, components or integrated systems; developing models and performing data analysis; supporting operations and developing process controls and procedures. At NNL you are a part of a team working on deliverables that have a direct impact on the Navy's nuclear fleet.

The NNL Internship is a minimum 10 week program starting in May / June 2026.

An internship position may result in a return internship or full-time employment offer upon successful completion of the program.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Candidates for Computational Science internship positions must be :

  • Pursuing Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Physical Science, or related BS, MS or PhD degrees from an accredited college or university
  • Must have completed at least first full year of college by May 2026
  • Enrolled / continuing in a degree program throughout this internship
  • Students must attach most recent unofficial college transcripts and resume to the employment application.

    Preferred Skills

  • Exposure to or experience in any of the following areas :
  • Software design and development workflows and utilities including unit testing, continuous integration, version control, debugging, profiling, and compiler operation / optimization.

  • Developing software with both compiled (e.g. C, C , Fortran) or interpreted (e.g. Python, MATLAB, R) scientific computing languages.
  • Database design and optimization, data pipelining, SQL.
  • Parallel programming and / or running parallel jobs on supercomputing systems.
  • Numerical analysis using ordinary and partial differential equations, nonlinear solvers, verification / validation, uncertainty quantification, optimization, machine learning and / or data analytics.
  • Domain knowledge of nuclear reactor physics, fluid dynamics, electrical systems, thermodynamics, or structural mechanics.
  • Cumulative minimum GPA 3.0 / 4.0
  • Prior related internship, co-op or work experience (paid or volunteer)
  • Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) or Naval Nuclear Program experience

    Pay Range

    23.50 / hour-$41.00 / hour

    Salary information provided is a general guideline only. Hourly rate is based upon candidate education and job discipline, as well as market and business considerations.

    The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities : Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
