Job Description
The Naval Nuclear Laboratory's Core Materials Development group is seeking an engineer to work on advanced core material technology for nuclear reactor applications. The successful candidate will be responsible for engaging with internal and external partners to aggressively progress promising core materials technology. This includes working with internal experts in nuclear fuel and structural material performance as well as external organizations such as national laboratories, universities, and commercial companies who are investigating promising technologies. Significant teamwork will be involved to develop and investigate new materials, manufacturing techniques, create development plans, propose tests including irradiation experiments in the Advanced Test Reactor, and oversee subcontracts with external partners. Integration of research and analysis of data will be critical skills as will the ability to communicate in documents and presentations. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is the preeminent reactor design company in the world, and the successful candidate will join the team responsible for the next generation of naval nuclear reactors.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 4 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 2 years of relevant experience; or PhD degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field; or Currently or previously NPE qualified; or CTE / ACRS and 1 year EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or Watch Instructor and Refueling Facility Area Refueling Engineer and 1 year as SRE.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in performing research and development in nuclear materials
- Experience in materials testing and characterization including metallography, electron microscopy, and analysis of test results
- Experience / understanding in material fabrication processes, including both ceramic and metallic materials
- Experience with design of experiments or other laboratory background
- Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate technical information both verbally and in writing
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
Compensation and Benefits
Pay Range
83,600.00 - $130,700.00 annually
