Job Description

Are you interested in a world class research and design experience applying high performance metals to demanding real-world applications This position involves developing the next generation of materials for nuclear propulsion systems, as well as supporting projects currently being built, and providing technical support for the US Navy's operating nuclear reactors. You will join a team of experienced engineers and scientists with a long history of solving challenging problems. The work includes materials testing, materials selection, and failure analysis. The scope of our work covers the full spectrum, from investigating new alloys or processing methods, to overseeing the production of nuclear plant hardware, to dealing with challenges in service. Areas of interest include heat treatment, fatigue, embrittlement, fracture mechanics, metallography, and aqueous corrosion. Positions in our organization are unique because of the wide variety of materials employed in our designs, and the exceptional array of testing and analytical resources available at your disposal. Our campus has over one hundred people dedicated to materials science, and the testing facilities to match. The successful candidate will have above average writing skills, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to draw out the best in others.

Specifically, the candidate must be able to collaborate with the team to:
Support ongoing test programs including test method development.
Support mechanical testing and material characterization campaigns.
Analyze, interpret, and report results.
Support troubleshooting material issues during component manufacture.
Provide guidance to fleet power plant projects and new power plant design community on material issues and power plant material selection.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 9 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree from an accredited college or university in engineering or science related field and 7 years of relevant experience; or Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part II qualified; or qualified SIT and 3 years EOOW qualified in the Nuclear Operations Program; or Currently or previously CRE qualified; or 6 years as SRE; or SRE qualified and 9 years of experience.

Preferred Skills
Experience in materials testing and characterization including metallography, mechanical testing, and failure analysis.
Experience/understanding involving material fabrication processes, materials behavior, and materials properties.
Knowledge of the metallurgy of low alloy steels, stainless steels and nickel base alloys.
Experience with the corrosion effects on metallics and non-metallics.
Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate technical information both verbally and in writing.
Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
Experience in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or nuclear engineering.

Pay Range

$103,100.00 - $161,100.00 annually

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities: Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nation's submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. We rely on the dedication and innovation of our nearly 8000 engineers, scientists, technicians, and support personnel.
