Job Description

Join the Naval Nuclear Laboratory team in a Regulated Waste Management Engineering role! In this dynamic and visible position, the successful candidate will interact with technical and operations personnel at the Bettis Laboratory to address regulated waste management needs across the site.

While this is not an all-inclusive list, the successful candidate will be responsible to :

  • Engage in the planning stages of testing, renovation, construction, demolition, and maintenance work that will generate regulated waste.
  • Obtain a thorough understanding of the work that will be performed, including project objectives, equipment, work area, and schedule.
  • Recommend waste management approaches and alternatives to the project execution team.
  • Provide engineering support (procedures, processes, guidance, and advice) for implementing the selected waste management approach in accordance with federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Coordinate characterization of anticipated waste streams using process knowledge or sampling.
  • Remain engaged with project team throughout execution, adjusting waste management strategies as needed to accommodate scope growth or change in project priorities / direction.
  • Coordinate and perform engineering surveillances of waste management practices to verify the alignment with personnel training and written instructions.
  • Perform engineering evaluations and analysis and make engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks, including the evaluation of waste streams based upon process knowledge or analytical results.

The candidate will receive training and obtain the needed qualifications to : Characterize waste in accordance with federal (RCRA and TSCA), state (DEP) and local (NNPP and Bettis Laboratory) regulations and enter radiological areas. Based on prior experience, interests and organizational needs, the candidate may also receive training and obtain the qualifications as necessary to : Determine the appropriate treatment and / or disposal site for hazardous, and RCRA aspects of mixed waste. Certify that wastes meets all acceptance criteria for the selected treatment / disposal site.

Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, technical or science related field and 4 years of relevant experience; or

Masters degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, technical or science related field and 2 years of relevant experience

Preferred Skills

Determining treatment and / or disposal site for hazardous and RCRA aspects of mixed waste.

Certifying wastes meets all acceptance criteria for the selected treatment / disposal site

Pay Range

83,600.00 - $130,700.00 annually

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) by Fluor Marine Propulsion, LLC (FMP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Fluor Corporation. Naval Nuclear Laboratory personnel are FMP employees who work at four DOE facilities : Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, and Naval Reactors Facility, and at the U.S. Department of Defense-owned Nuclear Power Training Unit-Charleston. FMP employees also have an established presence at numerous shipyards and vendor locations. For nearly 70 years, the Naval Nuclear Laboratory has developed advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provided technical support, and trained world-class nuclear operators to ensure the safe and reliable operation of our nations submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is a national asset solely dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. All candidates must be U.S. citizens. Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. FMP is a government contractor and maintains a drug free workplace and workforce. All candidates must be able to pass a drug test in compliance with FMP company policy and 10 CFR 707. Marijuana is a Federal Schedule I controlled substance and illegal under Federal Law. Therefore, FMP is required to test for marijuana.
