A non-profit organization with offices across California dedicated to driving impactful environmental policy changes, is seeking a Finance Director to oversee all financial operations.
The work schedule is a 4-day workweek with 2 days in the office and 2 days remote each week. This candidates can be based in Sacramento, Oakland or Los Angeles.
Position Overview
The Finance Director leads all accounting, finance, and financial reporting functions, ensuring financial health and regulatory compliance while driving strategic financial planning to support organizational goals. This role reports to the Managing Director and CEO.
Key Responsibilities
- Manages financial operations for the 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(3), including planning, analysis, budgeting, reporting, cash management, and investments.
- Ensures compliance with GAAP, organizational policies, and tax regulations.
- Establishes and oversees the annual budget and mid-year forecasting processes, including final review of budgets/forecasts.
- Analyzes and reports on monthly financials, including revenue, expenses, variance, balance sheets, and cash forecasts.
- Prepares monthly forecasts with insightful commentary for management and board review. Manages risk by analyzing liabilities and investments.
- Develops investment strategies while assessing cash and liquidity risks.
- Oversees fundraising plans and capital structure; ensures cash flow supports operations.
- Supervises finance personnel and manages vendor relationships. Sets up and manages the finance IT system.
- Collaborates with Program and Philanthropy staff on grant tracking, allocation, budgeting, and reporting.
- Oversees accounting functions, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, bank reconciliations, and monthly financial reporting.
- Leads the annual audit process and manages tax return preparation and filings. Updates and maintains accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Partners with the Political Director to ensure compliance with electoral activity and PAC requirements, working with external compliance consultants.
- Supports the Board's audit committees and prepares/presents board reports.
- Takes on special finance projects and other tasks as assigned by the Managing Director/CEO.
Requirements
- 10 years of professional experience, with 6 years in broad financial roles and 5 years in leadership positions in general accounting controls, systems, and procedures within political or nonprofit organizations.
- Experience with nonprofit fund accounting, ideally 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4), and PAC reporting.
- Demonstrated experience with GAAP compliance. Proven track record of final responsibility for financial data quality, reporting, and audit coordination for a division or major program area.
- Ability to translate financial concepts and collaborate effectively with non-finance colleagues in programmatic and fundraising roles.
- Experience in grants management and knowledge of restricted contributions/grant reporting.
- Proficient in accounting and financial reporting software like QuickBooks, Excel, and BILL.com.
- Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to set priorities.
- Team-oriented with excellent communication and relationship-building skills, adept at negotiating and collaborating with various stakeholders.
- Able to multitask in a fast-paced environment, with strong attention to detail and conflict resolution skills.

Salary : $135,000 - $155,000
