What are the responsibilities and job description for the Indirect Lending Underwriter position at Navigator Credit Union?
ROLE:
- As the Indirect Underwriter, you will evaluate loan applications submitted by indirect dealer and vendor partners. You will contribute to the success and loan growth of Navigator Credit Union’s Consumer loan team
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:
- Ensure that each approved application meets the Credit Union’s lending standards. The Underwriter will approve loans within their pre-determined lending authority and make recommendations to their manager on applications outside of their authority.
- Underwrite indirect consumer loan applications with the goal to meet and exceed individual and team goals while still maintaining the highest integrity in the decision making process.
- Dealer marketing: both face to face and over the phone. Dealer relationship management to build and improve upon current relationships. Report dealer suggestions and feedback to optimize our overall process and the experience that our members and dealers have. Maintain an up to date contact list for dealerships.
- Process loan applications quickly and thoroughly with a concise decision given to dealers in a timely manner. Communication methods may include making and answering phone calls, responding to emails, web message comments with dealerships. Answer lending questions from internal staff and dealers. Follow up with applications to ensure a high capture ratio.
- Share lending knowledge with other lending team members including processors to help develop the proficiency of the department.
- Underwrite loan applications quickly and thoroughly. Communicate lending decisions on indirect loan applications in a manner that provides the dealer prompt and efficient service in a friendly and professional manner.
- Clear and document Red flags. Ensure due diligence is performed: verifying account information, credit worthiness, and reviewing income/employment information, determining collateral value to ensure borrower’s ability and willingness to repay. Asking for and properly documenting additional information as needed. Ensure that proper adverse actions are used when declining an applicant.
- Work with Indirect loan processor, internal loan processors, dealers and members to resolve loan stipulations and ensure conditions are met prior to final review and approval.
- Maintain a knowledge of the current lending market by obtaining and reviewing competitor program information as needed. Remain up to date on and all industry trends and standards. Maintain up to date knowledge of our lending promotions and programs and policies.

- Must comply with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control
- Other duties as deemed necessary by manager.
EXPERIENCE:
- 3 plus years of similar or related experience, including time spent in preparatory positions. Advanced and continuous learning to stay current on Consumer Lending trends, Compliance, and regulations. Ability to review complex documents and loan information to find ways to make more quality loans.
EDUCATION:
- High School diploma or equivalent is required.
SPECIFIC SKILLS:
- Must have ability to manage time while working in a fast paced environment
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to own issues and problem solve while meeting established goals
- Knowledge of Credit Reports, Fair Lending Regulations.
- Ability to work with outside dealerships
- Ability to cross sell and understand member needs
- Ability to have conversations with members regarding credit and product options

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Sitting; walking; bending; squatting; kneeling; pushing/pulling; reaching; twisting; frequent lifting of less than 10 lbs.; occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including computer terminals and keyboards, telephones, copiers, facsimiles, and calculators. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours or travel off site whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.
