Role Purpose

Reporting to the Senior Vice President Regulatory Affairs NBCUniversal is seeking a Senior Counsel to join the team responsible for advising business units subject to federal regulatory requirements by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) as well as engaging in related communications and technology policy issues. Candidate must have demonstrated experience in the broadcast media and / or digital content industry and must possess superior analytical problemsolving and communication (verbal and written) skills.

Job Duties

  • Counsel NBCUniversalowned television stations broadcast / cable networks streaming / digital platforms theme parks and other regulated businesses on federal legal requirements including but not limited to : content regulation media ownership sponsorship identification political advertising accessibility retransmission consent network affiliation spectrum management and broadcast and facility licensing
  • Monitor rulemaking and other proceedings at federal agencies and where relevant assist with the development of policy positions and comments
  • Engage in advocacy before the FCC FTC and other federal agencies including in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders (e.g. trade associations)
  • Provide legal advice relating to accessibility laws and regulations governing televised and digital video programming including closed captioning and audio description
  • Analyze certain legislative and rulemaking proposals impacting televised and streaming video programming including privacy childrens marketing
  • Advise on emerging media policy areas including artificial intelligence algorithmic activity and content moderation issues (e.g. Sec. 230)

Qualifications : Basic Requirements

  • Law degree
  • Member of D.C. bar or other U.S. state bar and registered as inhouse counsel for D.C.
  • 7 years of related experience at law firm FCC / FTC or inhouse at a media / digital content company
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word Outlook PowerPoint Excel SharePoint and Teams
  • Desired Characteristics

  • FCC or inhouse counsel experience strongly preferred
  • Outstanding interpersonal writing and analytic skills
  • Superior sound judgment and professionalism to resolve legal issues quickly
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively including escalating matters as needed
  • Proactively handle multiple priorities in a fastpaced environment
  • Flexible to acquiring new areas of expertise as regulatory environment and business needs change
  • This position has been designated as hybrid generally contributing from the office a minimum of three days per week
