Description Of Work

The position is a Medical Laboratory Technician at Central Prison Healthcare Complex in Raleigh, which houses approximately 1318 close-custodial male offenders.

The Medical Lab Technician is responsible for performing a variety of laboratory procedures in automated hematology, coagulation, serology, urinalysis, chemistry, special chemistry, phlebotomy, and specimen processing. Additionally, the role involves collecting or assisting in collecting patient blood samples, processing specimens, and ensuring specimen acceptability. The position will work collaboratively with other laboratory and healthcare professionals to ensure efficient laboratory operations and maintain high standards of quality and accuracy.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Following laboratory procedures for specimen collection, specimen handling and processing, test analyses, result reporting, and maintenance of patient result records.
  • Identifying, documenting, and communicating problems with equipment, test results, specimens, and workflow and correcting or notifying the supervisor.
  • Performing and documenting quality control, calibrations, instrument maintenance, and troubleshooting.
  • Reporting test results to healthcare providers and consulting with healthcare providers regarding test results.
  • Knowledge and performance of blood collection and specimen processing.
  • This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits . **Applicants must pass a background check to be eligible for this job.**

  • Documented knowledge/experience of laboratory equipment that you are familiar with or have used.

Associate s degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution or completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course from an accredited institution;

or

High school or General Educational Development diploma and two years of medical laboratory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. The Division of Comprehensive Health Services is dedicated to providing evidence-based, compassionate, and constitutionally consistent medical care to all offenders in custody. Their goal is to ensure that all offenders receive full-spectrum medical care from the time of entry until their release.

The team of physicians, nurses, behavioral health services, dental services, psychiatric services, pharmacy services, and licensed healthcare administration services work together to provide emergent, acute, routine, and chronic health care, as well as preventive medicine at all prison facilities. They also coordinate with specialists and other clinical consultants outside of prisons throughout the state to ensure comprehensive health and well-being towards a safe transition from prison, improving public health, and decreasing recidivism.
