The Challenge
We are looking for a skilled Engineering Technician to join our Halifax County District 1 team as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects.
In this role, you will:
- Serve as a project inspector on roadway and structure projects supporting senior technicians and engineers in the administration of construction contracts and District Office duties.
- Monitor contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with contracts, plans, and specifications.
- Observe and document contractor operations, make pay quantities measurements and calculation.
- Perform standardized material sampling and testing.
- Coordinate reviews of technical plans and drawings relating to driveway permit applications, utility encroachment requests, subdivision design standards, and road addition packages.
- Ensure compliance with NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements.
- Maintain daily inspector diaries on project operations.
- Complete material reports, including materials received, document pay records, perform construction calculations, and computer/iPad data and record entry.
- Communicate effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public.
- Apply your math skills, such as basic algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations.
What You Bring
- Basic knowledge conducting routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standards/codes, and specifications.
- Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
- Experience reading/interpreting construction plans, standards, and specifications.
- Experience performing math functions, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Experience maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.
- Ability to obtain and maintain perform material sampling and testing certifications.
- Proficient record keeping.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a larger team of NCDOT employees and consultant inspectors.
- Computer knowledge and skills using Microsoft Office, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Experience with iPads/tablets, HiCAMS, and SharePlus/SharePoint is highly preferred.
- Ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment.
- Ability to safely drive a State vehicle.
- Safety toe shoes.
Education & Experience
- Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
- 2 years relevant technician-level experience; or
- An equivalent combination of training and experience.
Notes
- You may be exposed to hazards, including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic.
- You will be working outside in varying temperatures and weather conditions and will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
- You may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required by project workload/staffing requirements on any assigned Division 4 project.
