The Challenge​​​​​​​
We are hiring an experienced Engineering Technician to join our District 1 team.
 
In this role, you will
    • Serve as a Project Inspector on roadway and structure projects.
    • Communicate daily with contractors and schedule yourself and junior technicians to cover daily operations, complete and review NPDES paperwork for permit compliance, review project plans, and verify construction is in accordance with plans, special provisions, roadway specifications, and standard drawings.
    • Complete documentation, such as daily diaries, sample cards, asphalt reports, material received reports, monitor and inspect erosion control and traffic control devices, test concrete, perform density tests (conventional and nuclear), obtain material samples, and inspect all operations of the project.
    • Inspect grading operations, utility work, pipe laying, subgrade preparation and checking, asphalt and concrete operations, seeding and mulching, sign and signal installation, retaining walls, reinforced concrete box culverts, and bridge work.
    • Take and record field measurements and perform calculations/computations to determine contract pay quantities.
    • Assist in preparing partial payment entries for monthly payments.
    • Communicate project-related information with representatives from the Division, other agencies, and the public.
    • Serve the District office by working with counties, municipalities, contractors, and field support staff as the permitting technician to establish compliance with applicable engineering standards and guidelines.
    • Review plans for subdivisions, utility installations, roadway improvements and prepare cost estimates
    • Process permits, including driveway, utility and non-utility encroachment agreements, road additions and abandonments, and other records and reports.
    • Interact with local governmental agencies, utility representatives, contractors, property owners, and others to discuss adherence to policies and procedures, answer questions, and address complaints from the public by phone, written correspondence, and in person.
 
What You Bring
    • Skills evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
    • Experience conducting independent, moderately-complex inspections with limited supervision.
    • Experience maintaining neat, legible, and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.
    • Experience with materials sampling and testing to evaluate acceptance.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead coworkers.
    • Ability to establish and maintain positive communication between technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public.
    • Communications skills to communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner, both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgement.
    • Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites, including heights, highway traffic, weather extremes, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
    • Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing.
    • Strength to lift 50 pounds.
    • Computer knowledge and skills in Microsoft Office, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
    • Experience with iPads/tablets, and SharePlus/SharePoint is highly preferred.
    • Moderate working knowledge of math functions.
    • Ability to work nights/weekends as required by project workload/staffing with fluctuating hours, if needs be on any assigned project in Division 9.
    • You apply a safety philosophy and program to all operations.
    • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
    • Safety toe shoes.
 
Education & Experience
    • Associates Degree in Civil Engineering, Survey Technology, or a related discipline, and
    • 2 years of engineering technician experience, or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
