The Challenge
We are looking for a Regional Traffic Engineer to join our in the Metrolina Regional Traffic Engineering team.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Perform a full range of independent traffic operations and safety field reviews, including investigation, analysis, and safety countermeasure recommendations for Highway Safety Improvement Program and Fatal Crash locations.
    • Review Transportation Improvement Project (TIP) roadway, signal, signing, marking, and traffic management plans and make traffic engineering design recommendations.
    • Create/approve traffic ordinances and respond to internal and external customer requests.
    • Prepare economic benefit-cost analysis of safety countermeasures to secure support for and funding of traffic safety and mobility improvement projects while working with Divisions and municipalities to get projects on the ground.  This process, from development to construction, is intended to occur in a short period of time.  The goals are to identify issues, develop remedies, and construct countermeasures in a short duration to maximize the benefit for the traveling public.  This process provides an opportunity to make immediate safety and mobility improvement impacts.  The countermeasures selected are often innovative and inventive, making NCDOT leaders of technology and implementation of many safety improvements.   The areas of safety improvement focus to reduce fatalities and serious injuries in NC through safety countermeasure implementation include lane departure, frontal impact, pedestrian, and bicycle crashes.   
    • Collaborate and coordinate with NCDOT Highway Divisions, Regional Traffic, Mobility & Safety and NCDOT HQ staff, local municipalities, and other internal/external safety partners to deliver a full range of traffic studies, safety, operational and regulatory investigations, problem diagnoses, countermeasure assessments, and development of effective and constructible solutions.
    • Have extensive travel, active site work, and year-round exposure to traffic and field conditions.
    • Conduct investigative and analytical work using complex problem research, problem-solving, and the ability to prioritize, make, document, and defend independent evidence-driven decisions under pressure and constraints.
    • Perform special safety studies & safety initiatives supporting NCDOT's Mission & Goals, our Strategic Highway Safety Plan, and critical customer service responsiveness, sensitivity, and delivery.
 
What You Bring
    • Knowledge of the principles and practices of transportation engineering and highway safety.
    • Demonstrated ability to prescribe data- and evidence-driven solutions to often complex and sensitive traffic safety, mobility, and engineering problems.
    • Familiarity with and ability to skillfully apply: Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Highway Safety Manual, ITE Traffic Engineering Handbook, AASHTO Greenbook, SAP Tools, Microsoft Office Productivity Suite, Traffic Engineering Accident Analysis System (TEAAS), and North Carolina and Federal codes, regulations, and statutes.
    • Working knowledge of transportation engineering and civil engineering principles and practices.
    • Demonstrated ability to read, review, and interpret engineering plans.
    • Experience in transportation analysis and transportation field investigation techniques.
    • Experience prioritizing tasks, managing multiple projects simultaneously, and organizing work effectively and efficiently.
    • Computer experience with business software.
    • Ability to work cooperatively and collaborate with diverse citizen and stakeholder groups.
    • Adaptable communication skills to engage with diverse agencies and foster collaborative solutions for safety improvements.
    • Ability to safely and frequently travel long distances to conduct outdoor, day and night field investigations through the full range of live traffic, environmental, and terrain conditions.

    • If you are registered as an NC Professional Engineer.
 
Education and Experience
    • Bachelor's degree in engineering, and
    • 4 years of relevant experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
