The Challenge
We are looking for an experienced Safety Consultant to join our Division 5 team.
In this role you will:
- Provide safety support for the design, construction, maintenance and operations of the state transportation network in the Triangle Region, including the Durham, Franklin, Granville, Person, Wake, Warren, and Vance counties.
- Assess & develop safety engineering controls and design.
- Perform accident investigations, program auditing, recordkeeping, industrial hygiene surveys and monitoring, and environmental engineering.
- Develop and provide safety training and education and emergency planning.
- Interpret laws, standards, and codes.
- Review and research new/revised safety standards and laws to determine their applicability.
- Recognize safety hazards and unsafe acts by workers in shops and construction sites.
What You Bring
- Good working knowledge of OSHA standards and recordkeeping for general industry and construction
- Basic understanding of MUTCD, confined space, trenching and shoring and crane safety.
- Ability to express yourself effectively in writing and verbally to establish effective working relationships with NCDOT staff.
- Ability to investigate accidents, determine causes and recommend, develop, and implement corrective actions.
- Ability to develop and present safety program training.
- Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and databases.
- Ability to work safely in the heat on construction sites wearing a hard hat and using a respirator.
- Ability to safely operate a State vehicle.
- Safety toe footwear.
- Considerable knowledge of OSHA regulations and federal/state safety and health codes and security regulations and best management practices.
- Data analysis experience providing strategic direction addressing adverse trends with injuries, security incidents, or Worker Compensation.
- Basic/intermediate computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and databases.
- Experience managing Safety program policies, procedures, and budgets.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in safety engineering, industrial engineering, industrial management or technology, occupational safety, or a physical science or equivalent technical degree, and
- 3 years of progressive occupational and safety and health experience; or
- An equivalent combination of education and experience.
