The purpose of this position is to plan, develop and provide instruction and assessment activities for Academy cadets. Establish and maintain cadet academic records. Prepare and submit cadet academic awards recommendations. Identify, request and manage all course materials required for cadet instruction to cadets. Identify opportunities to reinforce subject material and learning experiences with other activities. Identify classrooms, facilities, or materials which facilitate the learning process. Demonstrate student proficiency by identifying or developing and administering assessment tools. Develop personalized Lesson Plan to meet the requirements of the curriculum. This position will also assist during orientation days and during the acclimation phase as directed. The acclimation phase includes assisting with orientation and registration, assisting with Pre-Challenge Life Skills Classes, assisting with administration of the TABE test, assisting the Counseling Department, and providing Medical Transport. Responsible for providing secondary school instruction to students assigned to Salemburg Tarheel Challenge Academy.
Considerable knowledge of services, policies and procedures related to a program or area of specialization. ? Ability to demonstrate and apply this knowledge in performance of administrative tasks; ability to explain and interpret information to clients/customers and staff. ? Considerable knowledge of program policies, procedures and information systems in order to communicate and process information. ? Ability to compile, assimilate and organize both printed and electronic information; ability to apply knowledge of data collection, storage, organization, manipulation and/or analysis of data. ? Ability to utilize office equipment and other relevant technology (software and systems) to meet organizational needs. ? Ability to identify and understand issues, problems, and opportunities; use effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions. ? Ability to clearly convey information and ideas through a variety of media to individuals or groups. ? Ability to present ideas clearly and effectively in written form; ability to adjust language or terminology to meet the needs of the audience; ability to use correct grammar, organization, and structure.
The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.
The Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy (TCA) is a quasi-military style resident program for at risk youth in the ages of 16-18. Sponsored by the North Carolina National Guard, the TCA mission is to redirect the efforts of young adults who have had trouble succeeding in the normal high school environment. The intent is to give them the skills and attitude to become productive citizens in their communities. The Academies are located in two different locations: Salemburg and New London, North Carolina. It is a 17-month program divided into two distinct phases: a five-month in-residence phase at the academies, and a twelve-month post-residential phase immediately following graduation for the in-residence phase. TCA seeks to improve the life and future employment potential of its cadets by concentrating on eight core components which are: Life Coping Skills, Academic Excellence, Responsible Citizenship, Job Skills, Service to Community, Health and Hygiene, Physical Fitness, and Leadership/Followership.

To qualify for this position, applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:
- Experience providing differentiated instruction and managing classroom behavior
- Experience maintaining accurate student records, preparing effective lesson plans and utilizing data to develop lessons.
- Experience with effective educational practices for teaching at-risk students and the skills to use educational technology in classroom instruction.
- Experience effectively communicating to both students and colleagues
- Experience utilizing behavioral management techniques
- Experience organizing classroom materials and lessons in order to follow North Carolina Department of Public Safety policies and procedures.

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
