North Carolina State University is leading the charge as the recipient of a $39.4 million award from the Department of Defense to establish the regional Microelectronics Commons regional innovation hub, Commercial Leap Ahead for Wide Bandgap Semiconductors (CLAWS). This initiative, part of the larger $238 million investment through the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science Act, aims to revolutionize the field of wide bandgap semiconductors.
Hub leadership, Distinguished Professors John Muth and Fred Kish, are dedicated to the “lab to fab” journey—translating laboratory advancements into fabrication capabilities for wide bandgap semiconductors. The hub brings together a dynamic partnership with N.C. State University and industry leaders, including Wolfspeed, Coherent Corp., General Electric, Bluglass, Adroit Materials, and Kyma Technologies, Inc. This collaborative effort will propel the development of semiconductors crucial for national defense, electric vehicles, power grid technologies, 5G/6G, quantum technologies, and artificial intelligence applications.
Essential Job Duties
The CLAWS Fabrication Technician will play a key role in supporting research and development activities related to III-V Power, RF, and Photonics device fabrication. The successful candidate will be responsible for hands-on execution of process flows, process module development, and data collection, contributing to the optimization of fabrication processes. This role requires a combination of practical skills in a cleanroom environment, analytical abilities, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

Responsibilities
- Device Fabrication: Be responsible for hands-on execution of III-V Power, RF, and Photonics device fabrication, including full process flows, short flows, and unit processes.
- Process Module Development and Optimization: Work with engineering staff to develop and optimize robust process modules including:
- Execute Design of Experiments (DOEs) for process optimization.
- Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in fabrication processes.
- Fabrication Methods: Establish hands-on proficiency in relevant fabrication methods, including but not limited to:
- Photolithography
- Metal and dielectric deposition
- Etching (wet and dry)
- Wafer dicing
- Metrology and Data Analysis: Generate in-line metrology data for Statistical Process Control (SPC).
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments, procedures, and results.
- Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Operate and maintain process equipment, ensuring proper functionality and adherence to safety protocols.
- Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, scientists, and other technicians to achieve research objectives.
Other Responsibilities
The successful candidate will also:
- Adhere strictly to defined safety and industrial hygiene practices in a semiconductor cleanroom environment.
- Faithfully execute and document processes as intended with careful attention to detail.
- Communicate results, plans, and other updates to a variety of audiences.
- Familiarity with MES systems and data entry
Minimum Experience/Education
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Other Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must demonstrate:
- Experience and proficiency in at least 2 of the following fabrication areas: photolithography, metal or dielectric film deposition, or wet or dry etching.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines with moderate supervision.
- Ability to follow safe procedures for working with semiconductor fabrication equipment, chemicals, and compressed gas cylinders.
- Comfort collaborating with students, faculty, and staff of varying experience and backgrounds.
- The successful candidate must be able to work on their feet up to 8 hours per day and manipulate semiconductor samples in a manual fabrication or test environment.
- Eligibility to obtain clearance upon request of the US government.
- The successful candidate would preferably have experience executing III-V semiconductor device process flows.
- Experience fabricating semiconductor devices in a cleanroom environment.
- The successful candidate would preferably have additional experience in:
- In-line metrology tools for process control.
- Use of MES and SPC systems.
- Statistical methods (e.g., DOE, GR&R) and tools (e.g., JMP, Minitab)
