The library system consists of the D. H. Hill Jr. Library, the James B. Hunt Jr. Library, and branch libraries for design, natural resources, and veterinary medicine. With a staff of almost 300 FTE, the Libraries has more than 5.3 million volumes in its collection and has a total annual budget of over $30 million.

The Information Technology (IT) department includes 18 staff across three units: Academic Technology, Enterprise Operations, and Technology Services (TS). The department is critical to the Libraries’ success in charting a new path for research libraries, with an emphasis on developing and supporting information and academic technology solutions for the Libraries. Department staff ensure the sustainable operation of technology-enabled services and spaces and provide leadership in defining technology requirements for library-wide initiatives and projects.

Responsibilities

The IT Endpoint Engineer is a member of the IT department’s Technology Services unit. They help to lead strategic projects around managing, maintaining, and optimizing endpoint devices, including desktops, laptops, and tablet environments. As the key departmental resource for Apple, Windows, and Linux computing, they provide technical consultations on highly complex technical projects; provide expertise on all computing platform issues; and train colleagues in troubleshooting endpoint and other computing concerns. This position reports to the IT Services Manager.

The position conducts specialized work in strategically developing and supporting the Libraries’ staff and patron computing environments, with a focus on endpoint management tools to design device configurations; optimizing systems performance; analyze systems usage and load issues; troubleshooting issues; diagnosing systems problems; and identifying technical trends in problem identification and resolutions. The position is responsible for forecasting, planning, communicating, designing, testing, and implementing system upgrades, updates, and patches.

This role is key in developing strategic solutions that improve operational performance and efficiency for computing environments and business technologies across the Libraries. This includes evaluating the current state of business technology resources; suggesting upgrades and enhancements to existing technologies; conducting cost/benefit and buy/build analyses; presenting findings and proposals to stakeholder groups; and ensuring that technology is appropriately configured, installed, and integrated with legacy solutions. They are responsible for gathering client needs, proposing innovative solutions, and ensuring that clients are satisfied with software and hardware products delivered.

The IT Endpoint Engineer will collaboratively develop, establish, and work within Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) processes and procedures to deliver exceptional IT services to the Libraries. They are expected to maintain detailed documentation of solutions, configurations, and troubleshooting processes.

The IT Endpoint Engineer is an active IT community member within and outside of the Libraries. They are expected to develop strong relationships with campus administrators and groups and maintain engagement in campuswide endpoint configuration and other security-related conversations.

This position is based in North Carolina. This position is eligible for flexible hours with a hybrid work environment. This position will require frequent onsite work.

Required Qualifications

  • One of the following:
    • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or an IT-related field or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressive experience in systems software programming OR
    • Associate’s degree in computer science or an IT-related field or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressive experience in systems software programming OR
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Advanced experience with endpoint configuration development using endpoint management tools like Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (MECM/SCCM), JAMF, Apple School, or others.
  • Experience researching and developing technology strategies and methodologies
  • Experience with scripting and automation in Python, Powershell, Bash, or equivalent tools
  • Project management skills, including assessing user needs, identifying potential solutions, managing multiple priorities in a high-volume work environment, and meeting client technical needs
  • Ability to foster an environment of belonging and well-being
  • Ability to communicate clearly and knowledgeably across audiences with varied technical backgrounds
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, establishing and maintaining effective work relationships while sharing ideas, information, feedback, and support with a team-centric mindset
Preferred Qualifications

  • Progressive experience integrating and supporting desktop and mobile computing devices
  • Advanced experience supporting computing in a large, complex, desktop and application environment; understanding of relevant cross-platform systems and protocols
  • ServiceNow Developer certification
  • Experience configuring and using asset management tools like SnipeIT, ServiceNow, or others
  • ITIL v4 Foundations certificate
  • Experience using APIs to improve business system infrastructure
  • Knowledge management experience
