This posting is for Transportation Worker II positions in the Roadside Environmental Unit. This position is in the operational area of seeding & mulching, herbicide application, tree pruning/removal, plant bed maintenance and general roadside duties. Your work will include installing traffic control devices. Your work will consist mainly of manual labor and equipment operation in NCDOT plant beds and along NCDOT Right-of-Way. The work will include operation, inspection, and maintenance of equipment, including trucks, tractors w/attachments, zero turn & slope mowers, mulch blower, hydroseeder, wood chipper, and other similar equipment, as well as hand and power tools, such as weedeaters and chainsaws.
Work in this position will require exposure to all types of weather conditions as well as climbing, bending, walking, and operating equipment on uneven terrain and slopes. This position is subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work, and work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Working knowledge of the principles involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by supervisor. May require work during non-traditional work hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and times of emergency.
The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s license with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe shoes are required for this position.

- Knowledge of vegetation management including but not limited to shrubs, trees, fertilizer, etc. using sound horticultural practices
- Experience in applying herbicides to control weeds and brush
- Experience operating equipment designed for all aspects of landscape operations.
- Experience in at least one piece of Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, front end loader, dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, mulch blower, sod seeded, tractor with sprayer attachments, brush chipper, conventional pesticide applicator, front end loader, hydroseeder, skid steer)
- Experience in operation in pesticide applicator, truck, tractors, and utility vehicles
