This posting is for a Transportation Worker II for the Division 14 Traffic Services Unit. This position will serve throughout the Division and report to the Jackson County office. The position is responsible for maintenance, installation and repair of ground mounted signs included: regulatory, warning, guide, work zone traffic control, TODS, Adopt-A-Highway and various other highway signs. The employee will operate and maintain a variety of small hand and power tools, occasionally assist the paint crew, install and maintain traffic control devices, historical markers and other duties as assigned. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with coworkers and citizens, and work in outside environment, including extreme heat and cold, year-round. Employee will be subject to emergency callback for emergency stop sign repairs, detours and inclement weather (Snow and Ice Removal).

Applicant should be capable of planning and organizing daily work activities. Should be familiar with the MUTCD policies and procedures on signing standards. Should have the ability to maintain daily records and reports on all activity within the assigned area. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and traverse rough and uneven terrain. This position will require some climbing and bending. Must be able to operate a state vehicle and heavy-duty trucks required in signing operations and able to perform inspections to ensure equipment is serviced and maintained properly. The employee must be able to follow oral and written instructions, and use electronic devices for communication and documentation.
Necessary Special Requirements
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
