What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substance Abuse Counselor position at NCHC?
The Opportunity:
The Substance Abuse Counselor, provides individual, group and family counseling, and may include case management of the individual utilizing services. The Counselor will also develop and provide person centered assessment, treatment plans and continued monitoring of treatment, coordination of services with other personnel and agencies and detailed recommendations on cases as needed.

What You’ll Do:
- Treatment functions of a Substance Abuse Counselor include patient screening, assessment, individualized treatment planning, intervention, individual or group and family substance abuse counseling, referral, discharge planning, after care or continuing care, record keeping, consultation with other professionals regarding the patient's treatment services, recovery and case management, and may include crisis intervention, client education, employment and problem resolution in life skills functioning (ref. s. HFS 75.02 (90), Wis. Admin. Code).
- Designs a program of treatment and rehabilitation tailored to the client’s individual situation based on knowledge of alcohol and drug dependency and counseling and treatment methods
- Facilitates a combination of individual and group counseling sessions based on client need and treatment plan
- Educate client and family members on the roles they can play in the recovery process, as well as community-based organizations and other resources
- Collaborate with psychiatrists, other physicians, nurses, social workers, and the Department of Corrections
- Implement an empathetic and sensitive approach with clients and their support system
- Complete urine drug testing on clients as required
- Adhere to state statutes as outlined in DHS Ch. 75
- Be available for various hours of work outside of normal schedule in order to meet client need
- Adheres to scheduled work hours with regular and predictable attendance.
What You Bring:
- Current Wisconsin certification as a Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor or Substance Abuse Counselor
- Associates degree in human services related field.
- Ability to perform an assessment, create a treatment plan, and make recommendations based on findings
- Ability to collaborate with community partners
- Ability to multi-task and perform under pressure
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
What You’ll Get:
- Pay up to $29.87 per hour, based on experience.
- Full time on-site position, typically during normal business hours.
