The Transportation Department of the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is seeking an Intern to support the Air Quality Technical Planning team with data quality assurance, analysis, and interpretation, and modeling approaches for air quality assessments of the federal National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS). Successful applicants will have the opportunity to apply short- and long-range planning principles, complete computational technical analyses and modeling that support and explain local air quality issues and develop improvement recommendations. Additional tasks include developing material to communicate air quality aspects efficiently to the public and partnering with local governments to pave the way for project implementation based on analysis results. Ideal candidates should attend school in the Dallas-Fort Worth region and be able to work at least 25 hours per week while attending school.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting with the analysis of air quality data, such as fine particulate matter data, ozone and ozone precursors
  • Drafting for supervisor review, graphs, tables, or charts of data analysis results to communicate air quality developments to local governments and the general public
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of databases for air quality data
  • Assisting with the development of R-scripts for data formatting and exhibit creation
  • Assisting supervisor with drafting, reviewing and updating air quality technical planning websites
  • Assisting with public engagement and outreach to local governments and the public regarding efforts for air quality aspects

Required Skills

  • Good communication, both verbal and written, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to listen to and follow instructions, coordinate with team members, and present ideas
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, with an ability to manage multiple assignments/tasks and work well in a deadline-driven environment without diminishing quality of work
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

Required Education and Experience

  • Must be attending an accredited college or university in a degree-seeking program during employment (i.e., transportation planning, civil engineering, environmental planning, mathematics, statistics, informatics or a related field preferred)
  • No work experience required

Starting Salary

Minimum of $17.00 per hour

The planning area for transportation includes the 12 counties of Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Hood, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, and Wise.
