Role Description: This is a full-time, on-site job for a Heavy Equipment Mechanics with a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) located in Gulfport, MS. The Heavy Equipment Mechanic (HEM) will be responsible for the diagnostic and repairs of light, medium and heavy wheeled equipment; works with a team of other mechanics; troubleshoots malfunctions, and repair, rebuild and maintain heavy equipment; operate and inspect machines or equipment to diagnose defects; dismantle and reassemble equipment; use hoists and hand tools; examine parts for damage or excessive wear; use micrometers and gauges; replace defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency. No direct supervisory responsibilities but may be selected to lead a work effort. Normal work week: 40 hours, Monday to Friday (5 days a week).


Major Responsibilities:

  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on military wheeled vehicles and trailers equipment.
  • Operates, inspects, cleans, tests wheeled equipment to determine equipment serviceability and proper operation.
  • Services equipment with fuel, oil, water, coolants, hydraulic fluid, refrigerant, and compressed air.
  • Disassembles, reassemble, repairs, cleans, treats for corrosion, and reinstall components and accessories for proper operations.
  • Extensive use of basic shop equipment, diagnostic equipment, hand tools, power tools, air tools, and lifting devices.
  • Disposes of hazardous materials and waste in accordance with all local, state, and federal environmental standards and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet organizational/operational objectives.
  • Heavy Equipment Mechanics receives guidance and direction as necessary from the Maintenance supervisor and/or Maintenance Lead with regards on policies, directives and professional development.
  • Practices good housekeeping, property accountability control, Foreign Object Damage prevention and safety at all times.
  • Job duties and responsibilities may change due to contractual requirements, to include working additional hours when the mission requires.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Have a certificate from a Vocational Technical School for vehicle or equipment mechanic, or have graduated from any Vehicle, Equipment, or Power Generation Mechanic Advanced Individual Training (AIT) (e.g. 91 Series Military Occupational Specialty (MOS)) or other DOD equivalent training.)
  • Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience inspecting and troubleshooting mechanical and electronic components on a wide variety of heavy-duty military vehicles using computerized diagnostic equipment, repairing, cleaning, replacing defective parts of components and systems.
  • Must be familiar with the use of electronic technical manuals.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must complete a background check and be able to obtain and maintain a favorable National Agency Check with Inquiries (NCAI).


Government and Company Furnished Equipment:

  • Tool room equipment based on availability and will be accounted for by DA-6 sign out log or Tool Room Mgmt. System.
  • Individual Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for employees to include but not limited to: coveralls, safety shoes, safety glasses (prescription and non-prescription), safety goggles, hearing protection, leather work gloves, aprons, and respirators (if required).
