What are the responsibilities and job description for the Canine Center Attendant position at NEADS World Class Service Dogs?
NEADS is hiring a full-time Canine Center attendant.
A Hawkins Canine Center (HCC) Attendant cares for dogs in our training program, following all dog handling, safety, and sanitizing protocols required to maintain a clean environment for NEADS Service Dogs in Training.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Follow all established NEADS protocols, procedures, and policies
- Develop and maintain canine handling skills approved by NEADS Training Staff which follow Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive (LIMA) methods in accordance with training standards set by Assistance Dogs International (ADI)
- Responsible for the daily thorough sanitation of NEADS Canine Center
- Proper disposal and surface cleaning of dog elimination
- Proper use and application of approved chemical products
- Responsible for reading all important daily information prior to action
- Responsible for properly preparing and feeding meals and snacks
- Ensure the safety and well-being of dogs, including but not limited to:
- Reporting all health and behavioral issues to the HCC Supervisor
- Properly administering all medications
- Maintaining safe living conditions for all dogs
- Perform all aspects of dog care: feeding, toileting, exercising, mental enrichment, grooming, personalized one on one time and more. Also includes the opportunity to learn more about the service dog industry as it pertains to the Canine Center (no dog training is included)
- Interact in a professional manner with all staff, volunteers, clients, and visitors
- Be well versed in NEADS program offerings, history, and overall mission
- Assist with all other necessary tasks as needed
Position Requirements:
- Basic understanding of dog handling and behavior
- Ability to work in a kennel environment which can include:
- Barking dogs for periods of time
- Working with concentrated and diluted cleaning chemicals
- Comfortable working with large breed dogs
- Ability to work independently and proactively as well as collaboratively within a team
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to stand for 3-5 hours at a time
- Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments year-round
Qualifications:
- Must be 18 years or older; high school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Hands-on experience working in animal care preferred
- Experience working with volunteers a plus
Schedule: Hours are Sunday-Thursday from 7:30am- 4:30pm, with a one-hour unpaid lunch break
