Position Summary
Maintains grounds of industrial, commercial, or public property as directed and required. Abides by Company Safety Program and Policies, while performing duties safely. Reliable attendance required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited, the following:
Performs regular grounds and landscape maintenance by mowing lawns with riding or push mowers; trimming and edging around trees, shrubs, ground cover, flowers, sidewalks and buildings; weeding, thinning and cleaning flower beds and other grounds by hand or utilizing proper tools and equipment; and setting up, adjusting, repairing, and cleaning irrigation systems.
As needed or directed, prunes shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs. Preps ground for flower beds and plants grass, flowers, trees. Waters lawn and shrubs. Tests sprinklers and irrigation equipment and makes appropriate repair as needed. Maintains fences, gates, walls, and walks. May be required to paint fences and outbuildings. Performs grounds cleaning activities by raking and bagging leaves for disposal. Also removes all litter from the grounds. Cleans out drainage ditches and culverts and removes debris.
Safely operates department vehicles such as pick-up trucks, tractors, street sweepers or riding mowers and portable power tools and equipment as well as, saws, grass trimmers, snow/leaf blowers, sprayers, paint machines and other grounds keeping equipment by obeying applicable traffic laws and following operator instructions, and by wearing appropriate safety items such as goggles, gloves, or other appropriate protective clothing. Will drive between properties to perform grounds duties.
Applies chemicals properly and safely by wearing prescribed protective clothing, masks, and/or rubber gloves and boots, following mixing chemical compounds according to specifications, applying the chemicals properly on grounds and landscapes designated for their use, and disposing of residual chemical products as directed or storing and labeling them for future use. In accordance with all regulatory requirements.
Maintains grounds maintenance equipment and building maintenance equipment to be operational by performing routine and preventative maintenance and cleaning of tools, equipment (including snow removal equipment) and machines within reasonable capabilities. Also sharpens tools as needed, such as weed cutters, edging tools, and shears.
Properly and safely wears prescribed safety protective clothing, masks, and/or rubber gloves and boots according to department standards and working conditions.
Shovels snow from walks and driveways during the winter, as needed and spreads salt on public passage ways to prevent ice buildup.
Other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED; and
- 1 years year experience performing related work in grounds maintenance; or
- an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Valid driver’s license and be insurable under company plan.

The following licenses or certifications would be helpful but are not required; valid CDL, valid state license for applying pesticides, valid City of Lincoln Arborist Certificate and/or Nebraska Arborist Certificate, current CPR and First Aid Certificates.
Skills and Abilities:
- Must have basic knowledge of lawn maintenance, landscaping and support services in maintaining landscape.
- Must be able to operate various machinery required in the grounds maintenance responsibilities which include trimmers, rotary riding mower, aerator equipment, a machine-driven push lawn mower and any other appropriate equipment.
- Position also require, the use of light duty vehicles, tractors, riding mowers, push mowers, string trimmers, chain saws, rakes, shovels, loppers, blowers, sprayers, hand saws, machinery with small tools, and other small hand tools.
- Must maintain punctual and regular attendance according to needs of department and based on weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
