Duties

The Coordinator of Special Education plays a crucial leadership role in ensuring high-quality services and supports for students with disabilities. This assignment works under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent and collaborates with school-based staff, families, and outside agencies. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving as a liaison between the central office and school teams on special education matters.
  • Overseeing and supporting the implementation of special education programs across schools (PK-12).
  • Ensuring alignment with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and state regulations.
  • Developing and updating procedures, protocols, and handbooks related to special education.
  • Monitoring the development, quality, and compliance of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Supporting case managers and teams with timelines, documentation, and service delivery.
  • Participating in or facilitating complex or contested IEP meetings when needed.
  • Providing coaching and guidance to special education teachers, related service providers, and support staff.
  • Identifying and coordinating professional learning opportunities focused on instruction, compliance, and inclusion.
  • Supporting recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of special education staff.
  • Helping resolve conflicts involving families, staff, and service delivery.
  • Collaborating with general education and student services leaders to promote inclusive practices.
  • Monitoring special education data (e.g., caseloads, service minutes, progress monitoring).
  • Assisting in the preparation of reports for district leadership and state agencies.
  • Using data to guide decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Staying up to date on changes to federal and state special education law.
  • Supporting the district in responding to complaints, due process hearings, and mediation.
  • Ensuring that timelines and procedural safeguards are followed.
  • Assisting with managing special education budgets and staffing allocations.
  • Helping determine the need for contracted services or specialized placements.
  • Preparing reports and presentations for district leadership or the school board.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include a minimum of a Masters' Degree in special education, administration, or related field. Prior experience of at least 3-5 years in special education, including leadership or coordination roles preferred. In-depth knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, and other disability-related legislation. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively with diverse teams.

This position requires district residency, and offers a 260 day contract. Selected candidate must hold or be eligible to obtain valid Nebraska Administrative certification.
