Job Duties:
- Design 3-Dimensional rural and urban highway construction projects which range from maintenance & resurfacing projects to reconstruction of capital improvement projects.
- Visit construction sites and gather data to complete your designs.
- Design various roadway features including horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, cross-sections, earthwork, guardrails, and other features.
- Participate in the design of erosion control features and implementation of environmental processes.
- Perform hydrologic/hydraulic analysis and design culverts and storm sewers.
- Prepare preliminary and final construction project quantities and costs.
- Participate in and document engineering decisions, write special provisions, and keep project correspondence files accurate and up to date.
- Prepare for and participate in project-related meetings and field inspections.
- Prepare project-related documents and reports.
- Aid and assist other engineering personnel.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
: High school education or the equivalent AND education or experience in drafting, engineering, or highway construction.
: Coursework, training, or experience in design, drafting, engineering, highway construction, or other construction field using CADD applications and practices.
Preferred Qualifications: Graduation from a recognized two-year vocational engineering school. Experience and knowledge in the preparation of highway construction plans, highway construction and inspection, highway surveying, and cost estimates. Experience in MicroStation, GEOPAK, and PC-based drafting, roadway, earthwork, drainage, word processing, and spreadsheet programs.
Other: Valid driver's license or the ability to provide authorized independent transportation. Occasional overnight travel is possible. Regular and reliable attendance is required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of basic engineering principles related to the design and construction of highway projects.
- Familiarity with NDOT's Roadway Design Manual and Standard Specification for Highway Construction.
- Strong organizational and public relations skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in the most current versions of at least one of the following design software is required: MicroStation, AutoCAD, or other related design CAD software platforms.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) is required.
- Familiarity with ProjectWise and OnBase or other file storage platforms.
- Ability to work independently, under the direct supervision of an engineer.
- Ability to work as part of a small design team.

Pay: $23.14 per hour
