Nature of Work
Advises students concerning an appropriate academic schedule, choice of major, number of hours that may be taken, probation, and/or suspension. Contact may be on individual or group basis or be made by correspondence.
Examples of Work Performed
This collaborative position is responsible for working with WSC units to support student success for current and stop out/reentry students. The position will coordinate outreach, provide support, manage referrals and a related caseload within student services. The position is designed to support a system of retention reporting, intervention, and advising that promotes student success and provides academic coaching/advising. Provides support for at-risk students, reentry students, students engaged in the completer program, as well as students currently on academic probation. Works collaboratively with faculty and staff to identify and address obstacles to student success.
Meet students “where they are” in space and time and will work on a flexible schedule that will necessitate work beyond a regular office schedule, meaning evening and weekend work and activities will be required to meet student schedules and needs. After hours and weekend meetings and outreach with individuals and student groups at various campus locations will be required to provide personalized support vital to student success.
ADVISING
- Serve as an academic advisor (primarily first-year and undeclared students) with assignment to a specific school as needed.
- Active participation in New Student Registration (NSR) preparation and activities.
- Assist students in developing and implementing a study plan, track academic progress, and understand financial aid opportunities and responsibilities.
- Refer students to campus resources when appropriate. (Counseling, Student Health, Career Services, Financial Aid, Disabilities Office, etc.)
- Meet with prospective students and their families to explain and answer questions about WSC academic and support programs.
RETENTION
- Provide programmatic support relating to early alert outreach and academic advisement for students who are identified as “at-risk,” establishing an academic success plan, identifying academic goals and help them to develop strategies to achieve those goals.
- Assist in work tasks to manage assignment of early alerts and other outreach campaigns through the retention software system. Including but not limited to communication and support for students not enrolled in next academic term, “low” midterm grade report, and excessive absences. In support of retention efforts, establish mastery of features, utilization, and configuration of retention software packages to ensure these programs are configured to optimize WSC work. Provide training for the campus community on the use of retention software packages.
COMPLETER PROGRAM
- Coordinate the completer program.
- Market, communicate, and perform intake meetings.
- Serve as a liaison with the Registrar’s Office.
- Recruit, support, and advise students seeking to return to WSC after a “stop-out” period and/or students seeking to take advantage of prior learning opportunities and attainment of an Associate of Science (AS) degree from Wayne State College (i.e. serve as the main contact and coach for students enrolled in the completer program).
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree (particularly useful, MSE or Counseling).
- Work experience in secondary and/or higher education, or a related field.
- Experience in working with confidential issues and records, with a preference toward work within a higher education setting.
- Excellent computer skills that allow for full utilization of data and reporting tools, as well as the ability to successfully communicate technical details to others.
- Capacity to prioritize work, maintain a steady workflow, and complete projects/orders in a timely manner.
- Ability to develop new procedures and strategies based on emerging initiatives, best practices, and the needs of other units within the college.
- Strong customer service skills and experience working with diverse populations.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills

Competitive, commensurate with qualifications & experience. Attractive & comprehensive fringe benefit package. Annual salary range is $48,454-$60,567.
