Job Description
Position Type: Hourly part or full time Hourly rate: Negotiated based on experience
Supervision Requirements: Volunteers
General Purpose: Assist the Shelter Coordinator and Assistant Shelter Coordinator in the daily operation of the animal shelter in accordance with the directives and guidelines set by the Shelter Coordinator and Neenah Animal Shelter (NAS) Board of Directors. Provide a clean, healthy, and humane environment for the animal residents for as long as they are in the care of NAS.
Relationships: Animal caretaker reports directly to the Shelter Manager and Assistant Shelter Manager. This position works closely with all shelter staff and volunteers and will do their best to be a part in helping to create and maintain a pleasurable work environment that encourages teamwork.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Ensures the shelter is safe & sanitary for animals, employees, volunteers and general public
- Overall Animal Care
- Ensure all animal areas are cleaned and disinfected on a regular and timely basis as necessary to maintain health and cleanliness standards
- Effectively complete intake of all stray and surrendered animals by collecting the proper information
- Assist with medical check-ins
- Conduct animal reclaims which includes completing paperwork
- Observe animals for disease/illness/injury/behavior issues and report any to Shelter Manager or Assistant Shelter Manager
- Assist in maintaining proper computerized information pertaining to adoptions, surrenders, redemptions, transfers, and euthanasia
- Dispense daily medication and vaccines
- Prepare for surgeries the night before, by, but not limited to pulling food and setting up crates
- Conduct all communications with the public, volunteers, staff, and businesses with a professional and courteous manner. Provide excellent customer service.
- At closing check that all animals are secure in their cages/kennels and all windows/doors are locked
- Attend monthly staff meetings
- Utilize Petpoint to print daily medical and vaccine sheets then complete follow up.
- Assist with vet runs
- Ensure phone calls and emails are answered/returned daily
- Preform adoptions for cats and dogs, giving new pet owners behavioral information and support to ease transition for animal and adopter
- Process adoption applications
- Work with potential adopters to find an appropriate pet using NAS surveys and personality assessments
- Serve as a member of the LifeFirst panel in accordance with the NAS LifeFirst policy
- Support the onboarding and training of Animal Caretakers and volunteers
- Train, lead and enrich Animal caretakers of proper Shelter procedures
- Preform volunteer training sessions
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent is required
- Strong computer skills required
- Demonstrated ability in care and handling of animals
- Strong communication skills (written, oral, and social media / technology)
- Strong customer services skills a must
- Valid WI Driver’s license
- Available to work at least 4 days per week including morning and afternoon shifts.
- At least one year of working in the animal care field.
Working Conditions:
- Dealing with Animals (mainly cats and dogs) on a continuous basis
- Working in constant changing weather conditions
- Handling and using sanitary cleaning chemicals
- Working with employees of the Shelter, volunteers and general public on a daily basis
Physical Requirements:
- Constant lifting and carrying(approximately 50 pound bags)
- Daily bending, stooping, walking throughout an 8 hour shift
- Occasional sitting
- Driving Shelter vehicle for errands and animal transportations
