Job Title: Newspaper Pagination/Graphic Designer
Location: Work from home or at the Akron Newspaper office in Akron, Iowa
Schedule: Weekly newspaper produced and finalized every Wednesday
Overview:
The Akron Hometowner is looking for a talented and experienced Newspaper Pagination/Graphic Designer to join our team. This is not an entry-level position — applicants must have previous experience laying out newspapers. If you’ve never worked in newspaper pagination, please do not apply.
This role is vital to the production of our weekly paper. You’ll handle everything from page layout and ad creation to legal notices and final file prep for print. You may work remotely or on-site in Akron, but every Wednesday is a firm deadline.
Key Responsibilities:
- Paginate and design the full weekly newspaper using Adobe InDesign
- Design display and classified ads, and properly place legal notices
- Work with editorial staff to format stories, headlines, and images
- Build eye-catching front pages and layouts that emphasize key content
- Ensure all pages are accurate, visually consistent, and press-ready
- Follow legal formatting standards and spacing requirements
- Manage digital assets, templates, and past issues for streamlined production
- Occasionally assist with social media or e-edition graphics
Requirements:
- Prior newspaper layout/pagination experience is required
- Expertise in Adobe InDesign; working knowledge of Photoshop and Illustrator
- Strong grasp of typography, spacing, and layout design principles
- Familiarity with formatting legal/public notices
- Proven ability to meet firm weekly deadlines
- Attention to detail, creativity, and strong organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively
- Bonus: Experience with CorelDraw or sign layout/design
