Overview
Nelson Mullins is seeking a full time Practice Assistant for its trademark and patent practice in the Charlotte Office. Ideally this candidate would have some administrative experience, familiarity with trademarks and patents, and an eagerness to learn more.
A Day in the Life
This individual will work directly with our Intellectual Property team’s attorneys and paralegals to assist with various daily needs. Responsibilities include preparing trademark and/or patent filings and managing U.S. and foreign trademark and patent prosecution dockets. The role involves corresponding with foreign counsel and clients, interfacing with internal firm staff, and pro-actively handling non-substantive docket items such as formalities documents, transfer of rights via assignments, and other administrative tasks related to client portfolio trademark and patent management. Additional duties include interfacing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, creating draft response documents or letters for attorneys to complete, and updating case information for the Docketing Department, IP Quality Assurance Department, and Accounting Department. This individual will also generate and run trademark and patent reports, review attorney docket reports for upcoming deadlines to ensure compliance, and organize and prepare files, docket information, and calendar action items. The position requires reviewing changes to USPTO rules and procedural updates, conducting legal research as needed, and ensuring adherence to USPTO rules and requirements.

The ideal candidate for this position possesses strong organizational skills, well-developed critical thinking skills, is very detailed oriented, resolves issues pro-actively, and knows how to be a true team player. This individual is also a technology pro and has no problem learning new software.
2 or 4-year degree and/or a paralegal certificate preferred; however, work experience may be substituted for education.
Flexibility to work overtime as needed to meet business needs is desired.
