Nemours Children’s is seeking a Director of Enterprise Public Relations to lead the national, state and local public relations program for the health system comprised of more than 70 sites across four states, including two freestanding children’s hospitals in Orlando, Florida and Wilmington, Delaware. Reporting to the Vice President of Reputation and Communications, the PR director will lead, manage and coach the enterprise-wide team in best-in-class public relations and thought leadership strategies fueled by the strategic plan’s National Reputation and Impact pillar, emphasizing national-first while ensuring reputational growth across Nemours’ geographic footprint. The Director will can be based in Jacksonville, FL, Orlando, FL, or Wilmington, DE.

Nemours Children’s Health recently launched a bold strategy to redefine children’s health to create the healthiest generations of children. This strategy is uniquely intertwined with the launch of our new brand designed to articulate how Nemours Children’s is advancing the health of children by going ‘well beyond medicine.’   

The candidate should possess an excellent track record in national and regional media placement, ideally on hospital or healthcare topics, with a keen understanding of compelling storytelling, expert positioning, message placement, and how to align with an organization’s business strategy. This candidate should also have significant expertise in issues and crisis communications and exude excellent critical judgement with the ability to partner with a myriad of internal stakeholders to minimize reputational risk or harm.

Given the enterprise-wide nature of this role, this individual would ideally be located at Nemours headquarters in Jacksonville, FL but could also be based at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Florida in Orlando. Travel to our site in Delaware, office in Washington, D.C. and other site locations will be required. To date, most work remote with 1-2 days in office.

Essential Functions:

  • Strong Leadership, Process Improvement and the Ability to Articulate Impact:  ‘Teach, Coach and Mentor’ direct reports as well as serve as a member of the leadership team for Marketing & Communications. Consistently review and refine infrastructure and process to create a high-performing team that regularly articulates impact to Nemours leaders and external influential stakeholders.
  • Thought Leadership: Help lead and refine Nemours thought leadership plan for its executives, key service lines and population health portfolio to include media relations, social media, conferences, awards, events and other channels as identified to position Nemours Children’s as a leader and convener in redefining children’s health. Help manage the communications strategy that leverages earned and owned media as well as third-party channels as identified.
  • Media Relations:  Grow Nemours Children’s rolodex of national journalists. Lead the cultivation strategy for the team to secure stories with a national-first approach that also positions Nemours favorably across its geographic footprint. Aligning with business objectives, and position Nemours Children’s Health as the preeminent voice in the field.
  • Writing and Editing: Excellent writing, editing and proofing skills for press releases, op-eds. speeches and presentations, grant and award announcements, social media, website and blog content, newsletters, and other needs as identified. Serve as an editor and proofer on behalf of the department for high-profile communications.
  • Social Media: Grow national reputation by refining audience strategy and the packaging of compelling stories in collaboration with the social media team. For key initiatives funneled into PR, support translation of key messages into compelling content. Support Nemours Children’s thought leaders to grow influence on their personal social media accounts as part of thought leadership.
  • Press Conferences and Events:  Lead PR strategy and support execution by team members for large-scale announcements across philanthropy, research, policy, and other areas as identified. Collaborate with department leaders to ensure successful omni channel promotion.
  • Awards and Board Placement: Help lead an awards and national board strategy that positions Nemours Children’s as a thought leader in redefining children’s health. 
  • Agency Management: Serve as the lead contact for national agency and vendors to ensure maximum utilization of invested resources.
  • Monitor Topics and Trends:  Stay appraised of news, conferences, and significant occurrences that could impact reputation. Synthesize and lead strategy to create new opportunities for Nemours Children’s Health.  

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Prior experience in PR for a hospital and/or healthcare.
  • Relationships with national health, science, and health policy journalists.
  • Experience leading high-performing teams.

Job Requirements:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or related field required.  Master’s degree preferred.
  2. 5 years of Public Relations Leadership experience required
