Position Summary Information
Summary
Responsibilities include cage sanitation, physical plant maintenance, safe operation of sanitation equipment, observation and reporting of abnormal conditions in cage-wash facility, acts as a liaison with internal and external service personnel, animal husbandry, and record-keeping under supervision.
Principal Functional Responsibilities
Facility Operations: Operates mechanical equipment to process cages, accessories and waste, such as mechanical washers, incinerator, autoclaves, waste management systems and bedding dispensers. Monitors supplies used in assigned areas and notifies Manager when supplies are low.
Sanitation and Maintenance: Clean and sanitize animal cages, enclosures, and facility areas to maintain hygiene and disease control including moping of hallways and trash removal. Performs routine maintenance on area equipment per the manual, troubleshoots failures, and collaborates service personnel to resolve issues. Performs quarterly environmental sampling to ensure proper sanitation.
Animal Care: Performs animal care duties, i.e., feeding, watering, cage/pen changing, monitoring health status of animals, and reporting changes to Manager and/or Director. Performs record keeping such as temperature/humidity, animal treatment, and room activity sheets.
Other Duties: Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Six months of general sanitation and/or equipment maintenance
Preferred Qualifications
- Coursework in sanitation, mechanics, or animal care
- American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level preferred or must obtain within two years of hire
- One year experience in animal care, sanitation and/or equipment maintenance
Physical Requirements
Must be able to utilize applicable equipment necessary for the job, as well as basic office equipment. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Ability to work rotating weekends and holidays.
Department Specific Information
Starting Pay Rate Range: $14.50 – $16.50, commensurate with experience.
