Position Summary

This is a hands-on, part-time position with day-to-day duties that include classroom instruction for law enforcement, military, fire, and hazmat personnel. The candidate will be expected to learn and provide training on clandestine laboratory safety while emphasizing HAZWOPER and other state and federal regulations. This position requires a degree in Chemistry with a specialty in nerve agents and explosives.

NES, Inc., conducts pre-employment drug screenings, background, and driving record checks, for all new hires. In addition, this position requires a law enforcement background check and medical baseline testing to wear a respirator.

Essential Duties and Major Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of nerve agents and explosives that may be used to threaten national security.
  • Knowledge of the specific types of narcotics that are trending on the street, understand the synthetic routes used to manufacture or extract various narcotics, gain knowledge of the types of personal protective equipment used in hazardous material environments and provide classroom instruction or applicable equipment testing.
  • An understanding and comprehension of clandestine laboratory lecture material and practical exercises to provide regular classroom instruction used to law enforcement, military, fire department, and hazmat personnel.
  • Knowledge of the principles of toxicology and effects of toxins in the body.
  • Stay current, versed, and up to date on law enforcement and military operations related to clandestine laboratories to ensure up-to-date classroom instruction.
  • Foster and maintain client relationships.
  • Help maintain training and mock lab equipment.
  • Assist in updating lecture material, field guides, and other NES products and materials.
  • Assist in creating, updating, and utilizing NES marketing materials.
  • An understanding and comprehension of respirator fit-testing protocols and be able to perform both qualitative and quantitative fit-tests.
  • other duties as assigned.

Specialized Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Expert communicator and facilitator and possess the ability to connect with all levels of personnel within an organization or classroom.
  • Demonstrate above-average writing skills.
  • Able to learn and understand narcotic synthesis.
  • Comprehend and instruct students on the use of air monitoring equipment (combustible gas indicators, photoionization detectors, oxygen sensors)
  • Comprehend and instruct students on the use of FTIR and Raman-based infrared field equipment.
  • Proficient in designing, creating, and constructing PowerPoint presentations is preferred. 
  • Previous or present HAZWOPER training certification is preferred.
  • Learn to present regulations and protocols for Level A operations.
  • Knowledge in marijuana grow and resin extraction techniques a plus.
  • Proficient with respiratory protective equipment.
  • Learn and become familiar with adulterating clandestine laboratory operations using Authorized Central Storage (ACS) protocols.
  • Experience handling hazardous waste and hazardous waste manifests is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint software is preferred.
  • Ability to pass a law enforcement background check and a medical baseline evaluation to wear respiratory protection.
  • Experience using the Emergency Response Guide (ERG), safety data sheets, and familiarity with occupational exposure limits (PELs, TLVs, IDLHs, RELs, STELs, etc.)

Requirements and Recommended Skills and Achievements

  • Understanding of various types of narcotics.
  • Understanding of the HAZWOPER standard.
  • Knowledge of respiratory protective equipment.
  • Knowledge of chemical properties and hazards
  • Knowledge of decontamination protocols for equipment or hazmat personnel.
  • Familiarity with crime scene protocols, evidence collection/preservation, and expert witness testimony.

Experience: Preferred to have 1 – 5 years of experience in one or a combination of the following job duties:

  • Narcotic or clandestine laboratory investigations
  • Clandestine laboratory response
  • Illegal cannabis cultivation response
  • Narcotic field or presumptive identification using colorimetric tests or infrared technology
  • Expert witness testimony
  • Development or delivery of clandestine laboratory, illegal cannabis cultivation, or narcotic training programs

Education: Bachelor's degree (BS or BA) in science from an accredited four-year university. Degree must have a concentration in one of the following categories:

  • Chemistry
  • Biological Science
  • Forensic Science
  • Biochemistry

Wage: Salary Range: $46.64 to $56.73
