Responsibilities:
- Utility Identification and Marking:
- Use specialized utility locating equipment to detect and mark the location of underground telecommunications lines, fiber optic cables, and other utilities.
- Ensure markings are clear, accurate, and compliant with project requirements and safety standards.
- Directional Drilling Support:
- Collaborate with the Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) operator to guide the drill head along pre-determined paths, avoiding existing utilities and ensuring precision.
- Confirm and validate drill paths using project maps and field conditions.
- Pre-Project Site Assessment:
- Conduct thorough field inspections to identify and mitigate risks, including identifying potential underground utility conflicts.
- Verify utility maps and drawings before commencing any work.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure all work adheres to local regulations, industry standards, and company safety policies.
- Protect public infrastructure and avoid damage to existing utilities.
- Equipment Handling and Maintenance:
- Operate, transport, and maintain locating equipment, ensuring it is calibrated and functioning correctly.
- Report any issues with equipment promptly to the supervisor.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Keep detailed records of utility markings, drill paths, and job progress for reporting and compliance purposes.
- Assist with bore logs and other documentation required during and after the project.
- Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with the HDD team and supervisors to ensure smooth project execution.
- Provide training and guidance to crew members on utility locating and safety practices when needed.
Job Requirements:
- Experience:
- 2 years of utility locating or related experience in the telecommunications or infrastructure industry.
- Hands-on experience in urban environments with complex underground utility networks.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in the use of utility locating equipment (e.g., ground-penetrating radar, electromagnetic locators).
- Familiarity with HDD equipment, including Vermeer or Ditch Witch systems.
- Knowledge:
- Understanding of telecommunications infrastructure, including fiber optic installation and maintenance.
- Awareness of local regulations and industry safety standards for utility locating and directional drilling.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and transport heavy equipment.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and on construction sites.
- Communication:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective coordination with project teams.
- Licenses/Certifications:
- Valid Class A CDL with a clean driving record preferred.
- Certification in utility locating or directional drilling is a plus.
