What are the responsibilities and job description for the AV Apprentice (Houston) position at Network Cabling Services?
The AV Apprentice is an entry level position which does not assume prior AV or installation knowledge.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Help with the delivery and installation equipment including audio, video, control, video conferencing, equipment racks, and other furniture items.
- Help run cabling through walls, ceilings, floors and other building structure.
- Load equipment racks and other furniture with AV equipment to be wired.
- Assist in the support screens, projectors, displays, lifts, speakers and other AV equipment while being mounted from wall or ceiling structure.
- Assist other co-workers in the testing of cabling and system components.
- Follow direction of other co-workers to ensure the system is installed appropriately in the required timeframe.
- Perform all functions of the position and other duties that may be assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Required:
High School Diploma or GED
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret system documentation including manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, and other project information in English.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others through either written methods or verbally.
Mathematical Skills:
- Basic high school level math and geometry may be occasionally required.
Reasoning Ability:
Basic analytic and reasoning skills are required in order to recognize potential problems, and to effectively overcome obstacles in the course of system installation.
Computer Skills:
- Basic computer skills including word processing, email, and web access are required.
Typical Work Environment:
Most installation sites are indoors in climate controlled areas.
- Some work will be required outdoors or in non-climate controlled areas such as warehouses or attic spaces.
Physical Demands:
The ability to work from ladders, scaffolding, or motorized lifts at heights ranging from six feet to thirty feet (occasionally higher) is required.
- The ability to work in multiple positions (sitting, kneeling, standing, and lying down) is required.
- The ability to lift objects up to fifty pounds on a regular basis is required.
- The ability to discern color of wire and cable is required.
Availability Requirements:
- Available to work days, evenings, nights, weekends, overtime and out of town.
- Flexibility in work hours is required to meet customer needs, work deadlines and/or other requirements.

Screwdriver set, or 4 in 1 type screwdriver
- Micro screwdriver set
- Minimum Two (2) adjustable wrenches capable of spanning at least ¾”
- Strippers for 12 – 22 AWG Stranded cable
- Micro Flush Cut Pliers
- Measuring Tape 12’ or greater
- Torpedo Level
- Drywall Jab Saw
- Utility Knife
- Safety Glasses
- Tool bag or belt
