The Sr. Project Manager – Fiber is responsible for overseeing and managing the most complex fiber installation and splicing projects. The position also involves mentoring Project Managers, Associate Project Managers, and Project Coordinators and collaborating with multiple stakeholders to ensure project success.
Essential Job Functions
- Manage a team of project managers and field personnel for bulk fiber installation, fiber splicing, maintenance splicing, and testing in assigned market(s).
- Serve as the subject matter expert (SME) providing technical expertise to peers and management.
- Take ownership of high-complexity projects from inception to completion, including developing project plans, scope of work (SOW), bill of materials (BOM), ordering and tracking materials, and scheduling team members.
- Oversee multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring quality execution and timely delivery.
- Mentor and support less experienced project managers to foster professional growth.
- Review all Project Manager (PM) and Associate Project Manager (APM) fiber projects for accuracy, profitability, and alignment with corporate values.
- Conduct periodic quality assurance (QA) inspections of active field projects to maintain high standards.
- Participate in pre-construction and ongoing status meetings with customers and vendors to ensure clear communication and project expectations.
- Conduct site walks to validate project plans and confirm conditions align with expectations.
- Work collaboratively with peers and operations management to ensure material inventory and resources align with project timelines.
- Manage the preparation and submission of all required reports and close-out documents for each project.
- Provide 24/7 availability to support customers and team members for urgent needs, including emergency and scheduled maintenance, outages, and expedited project requests.
- Expertise in high-count fiber (864ct, 1728ct, 3456ct, 6912ct) splicing and installation.
- Proficiency with OTDR and OLTS testing operations.
- Familiarity with live network/maintenance splicing procedures.
- Strong knowledge of bulk fiber installation, splicing, and testing operations.
- Experience with max-cell, corrugated inner-duct, and smooth wall inner-duct installation procedures.
- Proficiency in using Exfo testing equipment and Fujikura splicing equipment.
- Expert-level understanding of communications cabling in inside plant, overhead, underground, metro, and long-haul environments.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and diagrams to create take-off materials, including quotes, scope of work (SOW), and method of procedures.
- Strong capability in estimating labor effort and material requirements accurately.
- Advanced knowledge of fiber characteristic testing techniques and requirements.
- Comprehensive understanding of local construction codes, permitting, and regulations related to overhead and buried cable installations.
- Extensive familiarity with fiber splicing methods, testing equipment, and related documentation standards.
- High School diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
- PMP or equivalent certification preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience managing large-scale fiber projects with a proven leadership record.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience leading multifunctional teams in fiber optic or data center construction.
- Extensive experience in fiber optic construction projects and the communications cabling industry.
