Job Title: Medical Coder – Same Day Surgery / Observation Coding

Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Medical Coder – Same Day Surgery / Observation Coding professional to join our Health Information Management team. This role is responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for same day surgery and observation records, ensuring compliance with official coding guidelines, payer policies, and regulatory requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review and interpret Same Day Surgery and Observation medical records to identify and assign accurate diagnoses and procedure codes.
- Ensure proper code sequencing and capture of all required data for billing, compliance, and quality reporting.
- Validate documentation meets medical necessity requirements and query providers when documentation is incomplete or unclear.
- Adhere to all local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines, as well as institutional coding policies.
- Meet productivity and accuracy standards established by the department.
- Collaborate with clinical and revenue cycle teams to resolve coding discrepancies and support accurate reimbursement.
- Stay up to date on coding changes, regulations, and payer guidelines affecting surgical and observation services.
Qualifications:
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Sciences, or related field preferred.
Certification (required):
- One or more of the following:
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) – AHIMA
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) – AAPC
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of outpatient coding experience, including Same Day Surgery and Observation services.
- Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and medical terminology.
- Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and encoder software (e.g., 3M, EPIC).
- High attention to detail, time management, and ability to work independently.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience coding complex outpatient surgical procedures across multiple specialties (e.g., orthopedics, gastroenterology, ophthalmology).
- Familiarity with CMS, OIG, and other third-party payer coding policies.
- Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $29.00 - $39.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
