Position Summary:

Neumiller Electric, Inc. is seeking an experienced and skilled Utility Locator to join our horizontal directional drilling team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for locating and mapping underground utilities before and during boring operations to ensure safe and accurate installation of electrical infrastructure.

This position will work directly with our bore rig operators to prevent utility strikes and ensure successful installations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Operate utility locating equipment to identify and mark underground utilities before bore rig operations begin
• Track and verify bore head location during drilling operations using specialized equipment
• Monitor bore depth and path in real-time to ensure compliance with planned routes
• Interpret utility maps, drawings, and records to determine approximate locations
• Coordinate with drilling crews to ensure safe excavation and boring operations
• Document utility locations and bore paths with precise measurements
• Verify utility depths and paths using electromagnetic locators and ground penetrating radar
• Maintain accurate logs and records of located utilities and completed bores
• Communicate potential hazards or conflicts to bore rig operators and project teams
• Assist in planning optimal boring paths to avoid utility conflicts

Qualifications:

• Minimum 1-2 years of experience with utility locating equipment for horizontal directional drilling
• Experience with bore tracking systems and technologies
• Knowledge of underground utility systems (electrical, water, gas, communications)
• Understanding of boring operations and horizontal directional drilling techniques
• Ability to read and interpret utility maps and construction drawings
• Proficiency with electromagnetic locators, sondes, and ground penetrating radar
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
• Valid driver's license required
• Safety-conscious with commitment to following protocols
• Basic understanding of electrical systems is a plus

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
• Standing, walking, and working in outdoor environments for extended periods
• Bending, kneeling, and stooping to mark utilities and track bore paths
• Visual acuity to read maps and identify utility markings

Work Environment:

Work is primarily performed outdoors in various weather conditions and terrain. Some travel between job sites may be required. Standard working hours with potential for overtime during peak periods or to meet project deadlines.
