The purpose of the Chief Photographer is to train and supervise the photography and video editing staff while also leading that staff by example through shooting, editing and live shots. The Chief Photographer maintains quality control of all audio and video shot and edited for the newscasts. The Chief Photographer assists in the purchase of and helps maintain equipment used by photographers, reporters and MMJ’s. He / she shoots and edits news stories on a daily basis. The Chief Photographer also assists the Engineering / Operations Department with maintaining the fleet of news vehicles.
Objectives
- To shoot and edit the most creative and quality video possible on every story and teach those techniques to others.
- To be able to tell a story through video and natural sound.
- To be able to understand all video gathering and editing equipment and how it works and teach those skills to others.
- To be able to understand all live reporting equipment (SNG, ENG, bonded cellular) and know how it works for a live news broadcast.
- To assist Engineering / Operations in maintaining all equipment and vehicles in proper condition and working order.
- To issue gear to photographers and assist in keeping records of issued gear, including serial numbers.
- To plan, implement, and monitor compliance by photography staff with established safety procedures.
- To train the photography staff in communications law, in particular ‘right of privacy’ issues.

NOTE : The News Department functions 24 / 7 and this position can require long hours, unplanned interruptions at odd hours and could involve weekend and occasional holiday work requirements.
