Our Animal Care Manager will:

The Carson Animal Care Manager will support the Director of Carson Services and the team in achieving NHS goals, particularly in finding homes for NHS-owned animals both at the shelter and off-site.

They will ensure a positive experience for the Carson Community and oversee the care and wellbeing of animals, exotics, and livestock in the shelter.

This includes preparing animals for adoption in a timely manner and maintaining the shelter's cleanliness.

$55,000 to $62,000 per year


Total Compensation

Primary Purpose:

The Carson Animal Care Manager will support the Director of Carson Services and the team in achieving NHS goals, particularly in finding homes for NHS-owned animals both at the shelter and off-site. They will ensure a positive experience for the Carson Community and oversee the care and wellbeing of animals, exotics, and livestock in the shelter. This includes preparing animals for adoption in a timely manner and maintaining the shelter's cleanliness.

Essential Responsibilities

Position-Specific Responsibilities

  • Assist the Director of Carson Services, and other staff members, to facilitate quality pet care and adoptions.

  • Serving and interacting with the public, talking with prospective adopters, residents needing to surrender their pets, pet owners that have lost their pets, owners that need assistance with their pets, or Carson City residents needing animal control related assistance.

  • Hiring, training, and managing Animal Care Associates and volunteers to ensure proper cleaning of the facility and proper care and handling of the animals.

  • Ensuring that the Carson Campus is clean, sanitary, and presentable to members of the public and community at large.

  • Write and issue annual performance reports to Animal Care Associates. Carry out corrective action and termination if necessary.

  • Maintain a budget related to Animal Care needs at the Carson Campus.

  • Train and supervise staff members to ensure quality customer service and animal care.

  • Providing high quality customer service to people who visit or call NHS.

  • Working with and training volunteers to increase productivity, care of animals, and adoption of animals.

  • Assisting the philanthropy team, and their marketing staff, by photographing adoptions and keeping records of positive adoption stories in the Carson City Campus.

  • Advising people who are having a problem with their pet and/or want to surrender their pet to the NHS, with the goal of keeping the pet in their home. This may occur in person, over the phone, or via email.

  • Willingness and ability to learn and utilize several computer programs such as Shelterluv, ClinicHQ, Airtable, Canva, etc.

  • Knowledge of, or willingness and ability to learn about cat and dog behavior, common issues, and ways to address them to make good adoption matches and to keep animals in their homes.

  • Monitoring the health of the animals daily and rapidly identifying any health problems or conditions (medical or behavioral) and immediately reporting it to the Director of Carson Services or Clinic Staff.

  • Transporting animals when necessary to adoption events, to get them medical care, and to bring them to other shelters and rescues for placement.

  • Treating all animals humanely, properly, and with compassion always, regardless of the situation or circumstance and promoting a humane and caring attitude toward all animals.

  • Ensuring that animals are following a pathway to an ideal outcome and adjusting that pathway as necessary.

  • To participate in and conduct euthanasia on animals that have been deemed unadoptable by NHS standards.

  • Attend and participate in departmental and shelter meetings. Attending education conferences and seminars as recommended and approved.

General Responsibilities

  • Helps promote fundraising activities and solicit support of agency overall.

  • Interacts with co-workers and volunteers in an efficient and courteous manner to ensure a cooperative team environment amongst all departments.

  • Maintain and promote a positive public image standard relevant to Nevada Humane Society.

  • Professionally represents Nevada Humane Society with customers, donors, and business partners.

  • Attend and participate in departmental and shelter meetings. Attend educational conferences/seminars as recommended/approved.

  • In the event of an emergency, assist with the handling and evacuation of animals located at any Nevada Humane Society campus.

  • Participate in disaster preparedness and response activities for the organization and community as it pertains to pet related needs.

  • Address and/or report any safety hazards or unsafe activities.

  • Perform other responsibilities as requested by direct management, and/or the CEO.

Working conditions

Position-Specific Working Conditions:

Air-conditioned office or air-conditioned building with computer and internet access. Working outside, in a multitude of different weather conditions including hot/dry weather, snow, rain, high winds, etc. May require travel within a workday on a regular basis. Work is also performed outdoors and/or offsite for shelter events. Use of personal vehicles may be required for fieldwork; mileage allowance will be provided.

General Working Conditions

Working for NHS in any capacity is safety sensitive due to the responsibilities of this business that directly affect the wellbeing and safety of employees, animals and the public.

  • Work will be performed in a variety of environmentally controlled and uncontrolled conditions.

  • Due to the housing of live animals onsite, work hours may take place at any time within a 24-hour period, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Operational and public hours may vary by department or location and are subject to change. Attendance at events and other functions may require additional hours, holiday, weekend, evening overnight, or on-call work.

  • Exposure to allergens produced by animal dander, saliva, or fur, throughout all areas of the shelter, or other locations.

  • Exposure to zoonotic, or otherwise communicable disease.

  • Exposure to animals with unpredictable or aggressive behavior.

  • Exposure to animals that may scratch or bite unexpectedly.

  • Exposure to direct or indirect injury from an animal or other mechanical means used to confine, control, or provide essential care for any animal housed with NHS.

  • May require travel within a workday on a regular basis. May require overnight travel intermittently.

Position-Specific Equipment Use

The Carson Animal Care Manager will be expected to understand how to properly use tools such as catch-poles, nets, snappy snares, cat traps, dog traps, and other tools used by the Humane Enforcement Officers.

General Equipment Use

Telephone, cell phone, computer, printer, scanner, copier, two-way radios, and other office-related equipment. May require use of personal and company vehicles.

Position-Specific Physical Demands

This position may involve desk and computer work and being on your feet for long periods of time. Position may include (vehicle) travel back and forth to outside venues as well as some lifting. Must be able to work at a fast and efficient pace. Requires lifting heavy objects more than 50 pounds. Ability to safely handle and control animals of all kinds.

  • The physical ability to be at the shelter for the duration of each scheduled shift and other offsite locations as assigned or required to provide essential care to all animals under the care of NHS.

  • Physical ability to walk and/or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday to provide essential care for all animals under the care of NHS.

  • Physical ability to engage in repetitive motions of all limbs and the dexterity to grasp and hold small items with both hands, to move animals and goods. ability to hear, and discern noises from within 3 feet of you, visual acuity, near, far, depth, color vision, to provide essential care to all animals under the care of NHS.

  • Ability to and willingness to physically be near and handle any animals, and required tools, supplies, materials, used to safely and humanely manage their care.

Experience and Qualification Requirements

  • To complete Fear Free Training within 6 months.

  • Be NACA Level 1 Certified within 1 year.

  • Be euthanasia certified within 1 year.

  • High School graduate (or equivalent).

  • Ability to function independently, manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  • Strong interpersonal communication and written skills.

  • Ability to stay abreast of new developments in the community, especially as it relates to animal welfare.

  • Strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.

  • Excellent verbal, written and observational skills. Ability to understand English.

  • Must be goal-oriented, self-starter with a willingness and maturity to go beyond prescribed work and time schedules and meet assigned deadlines.

  • Possession of a valid Nevada or California Driver’s license with valid registration and insurance of personal vehicles, when job duties require driving and or the use of personal vehicles for company purposes.
