Our Director of Community Services will:

Play a pivotal role dedicated to nurturing and enhancing the bond between our organization and the community. This position oversees a variety of impactful programs, including pet support services, Pet Pantry, the community cats' program, volunteer and foster care management, and outreach events. Additionally, the Director play an integral part in developing a robust community safety net. Through these efforts, the Director ensures the well-being of both animals and people, fostering a compassionate and supportive environment for all.

Essential Responsibilities

Position-Specific Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Provide strategic direction and support to the Volunteer Manager, Foster Manager, and Community Cats Manager, ensuring alignment with the organizations mission and vision.
  • Oversee and enhance Community Programs. Lead all community programs, ensuring quality assurance, exceptional client care, and measurable impact. Prioritize the growth of the volunteer program, expansion of the foster care program, and the development of robust metrics to track and report program outcomes.
  • Maintains records and statistics that include, but are not limited to, pet pantry clients/pets, community cat program records, community outreach, pet support applications, and volunteer/foster records. Prepares management reports and other documentation as needed.
  • Develops and manages the budget for community-based programs. This includes allocating funds for pet support services, the pet pantry, the community cats program, volunteer and foster care management, and outreach events.
  • Monitors and reports on the financial performance of community programs. This includes preparing regular financial reports for the organization's leadership team and board of directors.
  • Ensuring that financial resources are used efficiently and effectively to achieve the organization's goals. This involves making strategic decisions about where to allocate funds to maximize impact.
  • Acts as administrator for the volunteer database system. Oversees data integrity and reporting for Volunteer, Foster, Community Support Services such as Pet Pantry.

Community Centric Pet Support Services

  • Develop and implement strategies to increase access to pet support services, such as pet friendly housing, veterinary and behavioral care access, end of life services, and grief counseling.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community partners, including government agencies, non-profit organizations, and businesses to identify and address the needs of vulnerable populations, including individuals with disabilities, seniors, and veterans.
  • Oversee the coordination and delivery of pet support services, ensuring they are effective and meet NHS standards. These resources may involve collaboration with internal and external partners.

Building a Community Safety Net

  • Identify and address gaps in the community safety net related to animal welfare and pet support services.
  • Develop and implement strategies to strengthen the community safety net, such as partnerships with local law enforcement, schools, and healthcare providers.
  • Advocate for policies and programs that support the well-being of animals and people in the community.

Community and Pet Support Outreach Events:

  • Collaborate with internal partners including Philanthropy, Animal Care, and Veterinary Services on the planning, organizing, and execution of community and pet support outreach events, such as pet adoption fairs, educational workshops, and community engagement activities.
  • Collaborate with community partners to promote and publicize outreach events.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of outreach events and make necessary adjustments.

Volunteer & Foster Management

  • Recruit, train, and manage a team of volunteers to support the organization's community-based programs.
  • Develop and implement volunteer training programs to ensure volunteers have the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively carry out their roles.
  • Recognize and reward volunteers for their contributions to the organization.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive foster care operational plan to achieve timely placement, follow-up care, and successful adoption outcomes for foster animals. Set and track measurable goals in alignment with the organizational strategic plan.
  • Lead a dedicated volunteer and foster care team within the volunteer program to deliver exceptional care, training, and support to volunteers and foster families, maximizing positive outcomes for animals in foster care.

Community Cats

  • Oversee the coordination and management of community cat programs, including Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR), Return-To-Field/Home (RTF), Working Cat Adoptions, and support for volunteer Colony Caretakers.
  • Coordination with community partners, volunteers, and interdepartmental staff including Animal Care and Veterinary Services on the quality delivery of community cat services.

Pet Pantry

  • Manage the operations of the pet pantry, ensuring a consistent supply of pet food, supplies, and other essential items.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for distributing pet pantry resources to those in need.
  • Collaborate with community partners to raise awareness of the pet pantry and increase access to its services.

General Responsibilities

  • Helps promote fundraising activities and solicit support of agency overall.
  • Interacts with co-workers and volunteers in an efficient and courteous manner to ensure a cooperative team environment amongst all departments.
  • Maintain and promote a positive public image standard relevant to Nevada Humane Society.
  • Professionally represents Nevada Humane Society with customers, donors, and business partners.
  • Attend and participate in departmental and shelter meetings. Attend educational conferences/seminars as recommended/approved.
  • In the event of an emergency, assist with the handling and evacuation of animals located at any Nevada Humane Society campus.
  • Participate in disaster preparedness and response activities for the organization and community as it pertains to pet related needs.
  • Address and/or report any safety hazards or unsafe activities.
  • Perform other responsibilities as requested by direct management, and/or the CEO.

Working conditions

Position-Specific Working Conditions:

  • Work may include irregular hours, shifts, and weekends (both Saturday & Sunday).
  • The standard schedule for this position is a five-day week, 8 hour per day schedule, with occasional holidays and on-call hours as needed.
  • This is a fast-paced environment that requires project management and being a calming entity for people and animals who may be experiencing stress.

General Working Conditions

Working for NHS in any capacity is safety sensitive due to the responsibilities at this business that directly affect the wellbeing and safety of employees, animals and the public.

  • Work will be performed in a variety of environmentally controlled and uncontrolled conditions.
  • Due to the housing of live animals onsite, work hours may take place at any time within a 24-hour period, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Operational and public hours may vary by department, or location and are subject to change. Attendance at events and other functions may require additional hours, holiday, weekend, evening overnight, or on-call work.
  • Exposure to allergens produced by animal dander, saliva, or fur, throughout all areas of the shelter, or other locations.
  • Exposure to zoonotic, or otherwise communicable disease.
  • Exposure to animals with unpredictable or aggressive behavior.
  • Exposure to animals that may scratch or bite unexpectedly.
  • Exposure to direct or indirect injury from an animal or other mechanical means used to confine, control, or provide essential care for any animal housed with NHS.
  • May require travel within a workday on a regular basis. May require overnight travel intermittently.

Position-Specific Equipment Use

Project Management Software, Volunteer and Foster Management Software, standard PPE to prevent disease transmission, standard animal handling equipment, live animal traps, feral cat dens, animal handling gloves, and equipment needed to support Pet Pantry.

General Equipment Use

Telephone, cell phone, computer, printer, scanner, copier, two-way radios, and other office-related equipment. May require use of personal and company vehicles.

  • This position requires dealing with emotionally charged situations, such as cases of animal abuse, neglect, and euthanasia. This can be emotionally taxing and requires a high level of resilience and emotional strength.
  • A deep sense of empathy and compassion is crucial, as the role involves supporting both animals and people in the community. This includes understanding and addressing the needs and concerns of pet owners, volunteers, staff, and community members.
  • Managing multiple community programs and events, coordinating volunteers and foster care, and ensuring the well-being of both animals and people can be stressful. Effective stress management techniques are essential to maintain mental well-being.
  • This role demands adaptability to handle the dynamic nature of community services, including responding to emergencies, changes in community needs, and evolving organizational goals.

General Mental Demands

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain emotional balance, competently and reasonably manage daily exposure to various animal welfare concerns, including adverse outcomes for animals, ethically complex situations, and hostile clients.
  • Must have ability to make decisions based on reasonable judgment.
  • Must have ability to work with the public, staff and volunteers in a fair and ethical manner.
  • Requires the ability to think clearly, act quickly and utilize sound judgment in a variety of situations.

Position-Specific Physical Demands

  • In addition to managing office tasks, possess the ability and willingness to handle animals safely and humanely.
  • Safely handling fractious cats to support our Community Cats programs.
  • May assist in handling and moving of large volumes of food including the lifting and placing of individual bags weighing up to 50 pounds.

General Physical Demands

  • The physical ability to be at the shelter for the duration of each scheduled shift and other offsite locations as assigned or required to provide essential care to all animals under the care of NHS.
  • Physical ability to walk and/or stand on your feet throughout a normal workday to provide essential care for all animals under the care of NHS.
  • Physical ability to engage in repetitive motions of all limbs and the dexterity to grasp and hold small items with both hands, to move animals and goods. ability to hear, and discern noises from within 3 feet of you, visual acuity, near, far, depth, color vision, to provide essential care to all animals under the care of NHS.
  • Ability to and willingness to physically be near and handle any animals, and required tools, supplies, materials, used to safely and humanely manage their care.

Experience and Qualification Requirements

Position-Specific Desired Experience

  • Must have experience working in non-profit animal welfare, preferably at a management level or higher.
  • Have three to five years of community service-related program management experience (preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience in growing community programs.

General Desired Experience

  • Experience in same or related position in a nonprofit setting-preferably animal welfare.
  • Record of continually increasing responsibilities with measurable results.

Position-Specific Requirements

  • College degree or equivalent experience in management, non-profit management, social services, or similar.
  • Have or be able to be Fear Free Shelter Certified.
  • Comfort with translation tools or bilingual in Spanish (preferred).

  • Ability to work autonomously, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines efficiently.
  • Staying updated on community developments, particularly in animal welfare.
  • High degree of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail.

  • Self-starter with a goal-oriented mindset, willing to exceed prescribed work and time schedules to meet deadlines.
  • Possession of a valid Drivers License with valid registration and insurance for personal vehicles, essential for positions requiring driving.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the welfare of animals and alignment with the mission of the Nevada Humane Society.
  • Consistently treat animals with compassion and respect, both professionally and personally, and promote these values to others.
  • Strict adherence to all local regulations concerning the ownership and care of personal animals.
  • Comprehensive understanding of pet behavior and care, with the capability to handle various animals safely and responsibly.
  • Maintaining a consistently positive and professional demeanor is essential.
  • A sincere interest in the Nevada Humane Societys mission and vision.
