The Nevada National Security Site is seeking a Machine Learning Scientist to develop novel machine learning capabilities for state-of-the-art science and engineering applications. You will collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers from partnering national laboratories and universities.
Responsibilities
Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709 , “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

Annual salary range for this position is: $79,393.60 to $119,100.80.

You will collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers from partnering national laboratories and universities.
Responsibilities
- Develop new or implement existing Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning (AI/ML) capabilities to improve the performance of cutting-edge accelerator and pulsed power systems, inform diagnostic measurement methodologies, evaluate opportunities to implement predictive maintenance on large scientific machines, and improve various data analysis routines.
- Collaborate with subject matter experts to ensure appropriate predictive capabilities and measurement techniques exists for the development of high-fidelity training datasets.
- Remain aware of advancements in Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning techniques, capabilities, and implementation strategies.
- Document results in institutional reports and peer-reviewed journals; present results at institutional meetings, project/program meetings, internal/external workshops, and various conferences.
- Participate in mentoring summer interns and less experienced staff.
- Contribute to and participate in planning and reporting activities.
- Perform other duties assigned by Management.
- Bachelor’s degree in a calculus-based (STEM) field plus at least 2 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.
- M.S./M.E. in Computer Science or related field preferred.
- Proven expertise in Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning as demonstrated by scientific publication and conference presentations.
- Experienced in executing code on High Performance Computing systems and remote machine access.
- Experienced in scientific computing using Linux-based operating systems.
- Experienced in writing and implementing Python code.
- Understands information security practices as they pertain to controlled unclassified information.
- Ability to perform the responsibilities that come with the position.
- Desired: Experience developing Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence for particle accelerators.
- The primary work location will be at North Las Vegas Facility at Losee Road.
- Work schedule will be 4/10s Monday through Thursday (subject to change).
- Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
