Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS) manages and operates the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) for the U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Responsibilities

The NNSS is seeking an outstanding Senior Fire Protection Engineer to work in the Engineering Programs division as a Staff Engineer. In this role, you will be expected to apply a range of theoretical, practical, computational, and experimental techniques to support the Fire Protection and Building Authority Programs.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all needed functions as a staff Fire Protection Engineer within the Engineering Programs division.
  • Perform Fire Protection Assessments for buildings and systems at the NNSS, North Las Vegas, and satellite facilities.
  • Perform fire barrier and fire protection system evaluations.
  • Provide support for fire protection system inspection, testing, and maintenance programs.
  • Provide fire protection engineering support of experimental work, new construction, and rehabilitation projects.
  • Prepare, check, or review third party designs for fire suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems, and fire barriers.
  • Support construction projects as directed by the Engineering Programs division manager and Fire Protection Program Manager to ensure compliance with Department of Energy (DOE), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and facility specific requirements.
  • Develop Fire Hazard Analyses and facility Fire Protection Assessments per DOE Order 420.1C and DOE-STD-1066-2023.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, directorates, and programs to ensure successful completion of fire protection projects.
  • Perform visual inspections of fire protection systems to identify degradation or performance issues.
  • Evaluate fire protection systems and components against existing design requirements to determine compliance.
  • Review and revise inspection, testing, and maintenance procedures to ensure compliance with MSTS fire protection program requirements.
  • Conduct or support programmatic assessments associated with the fire protection program.
  • May be invited to serve on internal and external technical committees.
  • Provide guidance regarding strategic development opportunities for new technologies.
  • Perform other duties assigned by Management.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology required for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical engineering degrees;
    • Or Calculus-based STEM bachelor’s degree in engineering
    • Or Professional Engineer license
  • Plus at least 5 years’ relevant experience. Skill building experience must demonstrate either deeper technical specialization or additional cross-disciplinary knowledge. Graduate research experience may be recognized.
  • National Fire Protection Association Certified Fire Protection Specialist or a Professional Engineering license is desirable.
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook Mail and Calendar) Adobe Acrobat, Blu Beam, AutoCAD, etc.
  • Recognized as an authoritative source of information.
  • Demonstrated experience in precision mechanical design of structures, systems, and components, with due consideration to design for manufacturability.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of various fabrication processes including metals machining, welding, and metal forming.
  • Demonstrated experience working within a formal design process environment, including supporting engineering change orders and approvals.
  • Demonstrated experience interfacing with machine shops and machine shop operations and resolving manufacturing issues with fabricators.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of MSTS personnel, as well as external partners and customers.
  • Ability to collaborate with vendors and others across the DOE Complex.
  • Ability to plan, prepare and conduct specialized technical training on advanced methods, processes, and best practices.
  • Ability to write clear, understandable, and workable procedures.
  • Ability to coordinate with inspection personnel to develop inspection criteria.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting design drawings and specifications.
  • Proficient in finite element analysis of mechanical components and systems.
  • Knowledge of Highly Protected Risk requirements, model building codes, Factory Mutual Data Sheets, and other applicable codes and standards is required for this position.
  • Demonstrated skill and knowledge of fire protection systems (including hydraulics, suppression, alarm, detection and barrier systems), engineering principles, practices, codes including but not limited to NFPA, DOE, IFC and other applicable fire protection, life safety, and building codes.
  • Knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations; DOE orders, standards, and guidance documents; and other applicable directives.
  • Demonstrated experience identifying fire hazards and their required preventative and mitigative engineering and/or administrative controls.
  • Ability to develop alternative and/or performance-based solutions to complex problems.
  • Skill in preparing engineering and design documents for fire protection components and systems.
  • Ability to perform duties with a customer service focus.
  • Skill in independently handling a full workload that involves complex regulations, interpreting these regulations, establishing priorities, and maintaining good working relationships.
  • Ability to understand interrelationships of multiple fire protection systems to identify cross-system requirements and affects.
  • Demonstrated experience with evaluating new and existing facilities against established or code driven design requirements.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate deficiencies to determine and prioritize appropriate corrective measures, and/or identify fire protection equivalencies or exemptions or appropriate alternatives for compliance.
  • Experience conducting various system walk-downs in nuclear facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in configuration management.
  • Work schedule for this position will be 4/10’s, Monday – Thursday (subject to change).
  • Pre-placement physical examination, which includes a drug screen, is required. MSTS maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
MSTS is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants offered employment with MSTS are also subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment. In addition, Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship, at least 18 years of age. Reference DOE Order 472.2 , “Personnel Security”. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Department of Energy Q Clearance (position will be cleared to this level). Reviews and tests for the absence of any illegal drug as defined in 10 CFR Part 707.4 , “Workplace Substance Abuse Programs at DOE Sites,” will be conducted. Applicant selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation, required to participate in subsequent reinvestigations, and must meet the eligibility requirements for access to classified matter. Successful completion of a counterintelligence evaluation, which may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination, may also be required. Reference 10 CFR Part 709 , “Counterintelligence Evaluation Program.”

Annual salary range for this position is: $99,340.80 - $149,011.20.

Starting salary is determined based on the position market value, the individual candidate education and experience and internal equity.
