Overview:
The English Teacher is responsible for creating a classroom environment that develops in each student the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing that are fundamental to a literate citizen. The English teacher supports the development and appreciation of good literature of all types and motivates students to read widely for information and enjoyment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Discovers and develops special talents of students.
  • Is attentive to student special needs.
  • Provides interactive and meaningful learning material to students, maintains positive learning environment for active participation of students, assigns homework, and conducts class tests for analyzing their progress
  • Implements and delivers quality instruction to students and executes the instructional program by demanding higher order thinking activities from students in a progressive manner
  • Designs curriculum that challenges the learning ability of students and is consistent with school district goals and objectives.
  • Prepares home assignments and test materials, analyzes tests' results, and creates innovative methods of teaching that meet students' varying backgrounds and learning styles
  • Collaborates with the content team as well as the grade level team
  • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences to develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and best utilize the available time for instruction.
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in state and national standards for the content area.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs.
  • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
  • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourages parental involvement in students’ education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
  • Ensures that students conduct conforms to the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
  • Coordinates with other professional staff members, especially within grade level, and participates in staff meetings and committees.
  • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
  • Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Key Qualifications:
  • Must hold valid Ohio license or certificate, 7-12 AYA Integrated Language Arts licensure
  • Must have demonstrated skill in teaching Language Arts
  • Must be open to reviewing current research and actively participating in staff development opportunities to promote professional growth

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA):
  • Have the ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, staff and parents
  • Must have the full support of the Building Principal, Director of Secondary Education, and Assistant Superintendent

  • Position is mostly indoors.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk and stand. Occasionally the employee will sit and/or run.
  • The employee will frequently bend or twist at the trunk while performing the duties of this job.
  • The employee will frequently squat, stoop, kneel, reach above the head, reach forward and repeat the same hand motion many times while performing the duties of the job.
  • The employee may routinely lift and move objects 50 pounds.
  • The specific vision requirements of the job include good depth perception and occasionally being able to see objects/persons at a distance.
  • While performing the duties of the job the employee frequently is required to hear conversation in quiet, as well as, a noisy environment and be able to tell where a sound is coming from.
  • The employee must be able to communicate to the team in order to give directions.
