Position:
- Electrician – Civil Service
- Incumbents maintain, troubleshoot, assembles and test electrical and fire alarm systems, is responsible for maintained equipment to include direct replacement of equipment or motors, electrical testing of existing equipment, replacement of ballasts, and low voltage wiring feeds. This is a working position to include performing preventive maintenance on all electrical and fire alarm equipment. Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations; inspect related work performed by contractors; estimate cost, time, and materials for electrical projects; participate in the maintenance and operations of an electrical shop; clean, maintain and service tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.

- Performs journeyman’s level of work for the installation, maintenance, inspection, modification, remodel, and repair of electrical and fire alarm equipment; act as lead worker to other classified staff in the area; and performs related work as required.
- Install electrical equipment and components in a neat and professional manner, in accordance with the National Electric Code, and local building codes.
- Performs skilled electrical work at the journeyman level.
- Installs, tests, repairs and maintains electrical circuits, wiring systems, fixtures, appliances and equipment.
- Troubleshoots and repairs faulty electrical wiring, defective electrical equipment, and machinery such as motors, generators, transformers, switches, sockets, etc.
- Inspects and tests circuits and fixtures to locate broken wires, loose connections, blown fuses, faulty switches, grounds, shorts, and other defects.
- Uses common hand tools and electrical ohm test equipment such as meters, voltmeters, ammeters, growlers, multi meters and other test equipment.
- Install branch circuit piping and wiring required for general power and lighting, distribution transformers, motor control circuits, panel boards, power distribution units and computer floor power wiring to equipment.
- Electrical lighting, communication, power circuits and equipment.
- Isolate defects in wiring, switches, motors and other electrical equipment or components using suitable troubleshooting testing instruments.
- Examine and test elements of electrical systems to locate faults, such as blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections, and worn motor brushes.
- Replace faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, and other elements of electrical systems, fixtures, and applications.
- Install conduit, wiring, receptacles, switches, and fixtures for existing applications as directed.
- Replace defective equipment parts such as gears, bushings and bearings, and other related electrical parts.
- Replace lamps and ballasts as required.
- Perform annual preventative maintenance of VFD’s panels, and transformers.
- Adhere to established electrical work order preventive maintenance schedules.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working order.
- May maintain storage batteries.
- Performs supervision over helpers and apprentices.
- Performs monthly test and inspection of all Emergency Generators.
- Maintains and update Emergency Generator logbook.
- Uninterruptible power systems
- Monitors and records input and output amps, frequency A/C and D/C voltage readings as required.
- Visual inspection of area.
- Performs and coordinates preventive maintenance and/or repairs.
- Perform complex testing of electrical power transformers as mandated by NETA, IEEE, ANSI, and NEC. This includes insulation resistance testing, over current device coordination/calibration and testing, transformer insulation oil analysis for dielectric strength, and infrared survey of electrical and mechanical systems.
- As required, estimate materials needed and record time and materials expended on each work order.
- Conduct routine building inspections to assess needs relating to electrical work and maintenance related electrical functions.
- Perform additional duties as directed by the supervisor.
- This classification requires the use of a Valid Massachusetts Electrician’s License. This classification requires the use of the personal or District vehicle while conducting District business, must possess a valid (Class D) Massachusetts driver’s license and an acceptable driving record. Ability to complete the following trainings as required: lock out tag out, confined space, MSDS, asbestos and lead identification, ladder safety, emergency evacuation, in-house OSHA, and respirator training.
- Possess a high school diploma or an approved GED. Possess a current master’s degree or Journeyman Electrician’s License.
- Three to five years’ experience performing electrical maintenance in a commercial/ educational facility.
- Knowledge of the National Electrical Code, AC and DC motor power and control methods, all facets of cabling and raceway systems, blueprint reading, mathematics, and preventive/predictive maintenance.
- Good communication skills
- Capable of analyzing and solving problems with various electrical and BMS controls systems.
- Have the ability and willingness to work overtime and support after-hours events.
