Position Overview
Scouting America, New Birth of Freedom Council is hiring a Camp Ranger to serve as the on-site caretaker of our beloved Camp Tuckahoe. This full-time, hands-on role is ideal for someone who takes pride in maintaining safe, clean, and welcoming spaces for others to enjoy.
As the on-site caretaker, you’ll be responsible for property maintenance, facility upkeep, and supporting year-round camp use by youth and families. Your work will directly contribute to creating meaningful outdoor experiences supporting young people's character development and leadership growth.

Responsibilities
• Monitor and prevent unauthorized access, trespassing, illegal dumping, and fire hazards on camp property.
• Maintain safe operating conditions across the property; be familiar with emergency procedures and ensure emergency contact information is visibly posted in the residence.
• Follow Scouting America standards for long-term camps outlined in the National Camp Accreditation Program (NCAP).
• Adhere to council business procedures, including proper petty cash handling, accurate vehicle usage logs, and timely submission of monthly expense reports.
• Provide weekly work plans and reports; maintain accurate and up-to-date operational records.
• Supervise and direct volunteers as assigned, ensuring productive and safe work practices.
Operation of Physical Facilities and Property
• Maintain all camp facilities and equipment in safe, functional condition, paying special attention to health, safety, sanitation, and cleanliness—including routine custodial responsibilities.
• Provide estimates for time and materials when needed; complete general repairs as approved.
• Collaborate with the Camp Director and Campmaster Corps to address facility needs and ensure smooth camp operations.
• Coordinate with program staff to support the setup and takedown of program-related equipment and materials.
• Contribute to developing and implementing a comprehensive year-round maintenance plan for all camp assets, engaging volunteers where appropriate.
• Submit timely and accurate reports on camp usage by Scouting and non-Scouting groups.
Maintenance of Physical Facilities and Property
• Conduct regular inspections to identify necessary repairs and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
• Provide time and material estimates as needed and complete general repairs upon approval.
• Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities and repairs.
• Oversee the execution of property conservation plans in alignment with council objectives.
• Collaborate actively with the council’s property committee, participating in regular meetings to help set goals and coordinate property-related projects.
Relationships
• Foster positive relationships with local officials, government agencies, neighboring landowners, and the surrounding community as directed.
• Serve as a welcoming host for camp visitors and coordinate volunteer service days and work projects.
• Represent the council professionally and positively when interacting with visitors, Scouts, and Scouters.
• Actively promote the use of camp facilities to Scouting America units and approved outside groups.
• Maintain a clean, well-kept ranger residence and surrounding areas, especially those visible or accessible to the public.
Education
High school diploma or GED
Qualifications and Requirements
• Strong interpersonal skills with a friendly, service-oriented attitude toward Scouts, Scouters, and the public.
• Ability to enforce council policies and procedures with fairness and professionalism.
• Proficient in general maintenance with specialized skills in at least one technical area (e.g., plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, or equipment operation).
• Capable of planning and managing tasks independently with minimal supervision.
Personal Qualifications
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Physically and mentally fit to perform the duties of the position.
• Demonstrates personal responsibility, strong work ethic, and sound judgment.
• Lives in a manner consistent with the values of Scouting, including financial and personal integrity.
• Be willing to accept and uphold Scouting America’s leadership and membership standards and subscribe to the Scout Oath and Law. (Details available at scouting.org)
• A background in Scouting is helpful but not required. Employment is contingent upon completing criminal background checks, reference checks, and a motor vehicle record review.
Licenses
National Camp School (Ranger section) will be required once hired. Other certifications (e.g., pool operator, pesticide applicator, etc.) will be necessary post-hire. Youth Protection and other Scouting America online training are also required.

Salary Range: $35,000 – $38,000 annually. Compensation also includes on-site housing, paid utilities, a cell phone allowance, and reimbursement for business mileage when using a personal vehicle.
